“Haven Holidays - Combe Haven - Family Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2011

This Haven site is an ideal base for visiting Hastings and surrounding area, The entertainment available onsite is varied and suitable for all ages. The sports facilities including recently built space bowl outdoor flume.

The catering options include Burger King, Papa John's Pizza and a Mash and Barrell Restaurant.

This site benefits with a Sports Bar in the old entertainment complex at the far end of site ideal if you wish to avoid childrens club. The site was clean and the housekeeping team were installing microwaves in all older caravans. New pillows were delivered during stay to replace the older flat polyester pillows from last season.

The site was clean however parking was hard due to lack of disabled bays by disabled caravans. Toilets clean and tidy in main complex and Spar shop large with plenty of choice - some good special offers but worth visiting local shops easily accessible by bus to save money.

Plenty of good attractions to visit locally and good selection of amusements and restaurants available in Hastings. There is enough to keep a family amused at reasonably cost for up to 2 week stay.

If you are an older guest there is still plenty to offer including sports and OAP discounts.

Room Tip: Worth paying for newer models and highest grade you can afford if you require luxury. Bedroom 2 and...

As owners of a caravan at Coombe Haven we would like to agree with the other owners comments, as the ownesr of a lovely Superior caravan which we sublet, I do agree it depends who stays in your caravan, some people respect it some don't! Needless to say we love staying there and love all the park has to offer! If you pay £9.50 you're not going to always get a good deal! We have stayed in many Haven sites and decided to buy here as it had more to offer

So don't let the silly reviews put anyone off, there is lots too do for all ages and there's plenty of things to do in the local area.

Well done Coombe Haven!

We stayed at Combe Haven for 4 nights, Monday - Friday in October as part of the £9.50 Sun Holidays offer, 2 adults and 1 child (7years). Upon arrival, we were checked in quickly and given keys to the caravan, which was a "deluxe" model and had been upgraded to a 3 bedroom caravan.

Caravan

The caravan had dirty carpets, badly fitting curtains, broken worktops, but had clean surfaces, glasses, plates etc .... The beds had clean sheets and were made on arrival.

To be honest, it was pretty much as I expected, seeing Watchdog and other reviews, but as we didnt intend to spend much time inside the caravan, it would be OK for us to cope with.

Staying with the caravan, there was alot of mildrew in the bathroom and bedrooms, but following the first night we could see how quickly this could build up, with the weather cold and damp outside and the heating inside causing alot of condensation.

Beds were not comfortable, you could feel the springs.

The Carbon Monoxide detector in the kitchen had no batteries in it and there were 2 spaces on the walls of the caravan where the smoke alarms should have been.

It also smelt musty - maybe nobody stayed in it for a while .. or someone had smoked in there before.

TV was too small with no remote control and it could have done with better heating for the night time, however, it soon warmed up when the fire was on next morning.

Bar and Food

Contrary to some other reviews, we found the Mash and Barrel pub to be excellent .... we thought the food was reasonably priced and was always hot and plentiful .. in fact, we never managed to finish a main course... Starters were from £3.95 and mains averaged around £9.50 (Carvery - all you can eat was £8.95 for Adult and £5.50 for kids) Lager was £3.05 a pint for Carlsberg.....

There were special offers available, such as kids eat free with every adult meal between 12 and 5pm and for the evenings 2 x fish and chips and a bottle of wine was £19.95 ..... TIP = a bottle of Kumala wine was £7.95 (but one glass was £4.50, so be careful).

The entertainment was not the best, but was better than Haven in St. Ives - however, the 7yr old we were with loved it and took part every night with the dancing, magic show, science show and photos with the characters that were on stage .... we never stayed for the late night "live" acts so could not comment.

As well as the Mash and Barrell, there was a Burger King (£7 for a meal) and Papa Johns pizza, but we never ate the junk food.

On site Spar shop was OK for essentials, however, Tesco is 5 mins away and is cheaper.

Pool

The pool was OK, big enough for kids, but not decent to do swimming due to the amount of people in at any one time ... the outside slide was only open specific days and hours due to lifeguard availability.

The changing rooms were clean, except for the crap that other guests left in the changing rooms instead of using bins provided, such as used nappies.

We went out 3 days of the 4 we were there, including Battle, Brighton and into Hastings, but there isnt alot to do in October.

Would i go back ...? - if on another £9.50 offer, but forget it if i had to pay full price (i checked online with Haven and they wanted nearly £900 for the same week ..... not worth that by any means when you can go all inclusive in Spain in October for £600 for the 3 of us.

Room Tip: Look for special offers in the Mash and Barrel for food and drink.... dont just look at the menu.

For the first time ever at a holiday park we booked standard accomodation, BIG MISTAKE!
The static caravan was filthy throughout, and needed a good hour of cleaning! Furniture was threadbare, carpet filthy and half the bedding missing.
Food at the "mash and barrel" was cold and overpriced.
Entertainment was very limited and the indoor pool was small with no flumes etc.
All in all compared to other parks we have stayed at I was expecting Haven to be the best and left very disappointed.

Really welcoming greeting in check-in but this was the high point! Caravan was "deluxe" grade, but work tops were sticky in places and the van had a musty smell. Only once had we bleached surfaces and air freshened throughout was this to an acceptable standard. Entertaiment on site wasnt good either, animation team appeared to be going through the motions. However the location of the site proved a decent base to explore the many places of interest and attractions in Sussex.

arrived via the Sun deal (1st time).3 of us over 60 years young expecting the worst but were pleasantly surprised. caravan immaculate, grounds lovely, everything clean, security guards patrolling at night felt very safe.swimming pool was like one at meditteranean resorts. Club very modern, food on site excellent. would go again.

Room Tip: take hot water bottle if you are in caravan in late September can get bit chilly

We travelled here in May on an offer through our travel agency. I don't normally write reviews on our UK breaks as we travel around the country all the time, but I was shocked to see some of the poor reviews on here and wondered if we stayed at the same place?!
The parks grounds are well maintained and kept clean and tidy. Our van was of a good standard (although the carpets were a bit grubby) and although quite a walk from the main entertainment area, it was quiet. We had a parking space right outside our accommodation and were not too overlooked by other vans. The cooking equipment and utensils were clean and undamaged, the fridge and cooker also clean. The beds were a bit hard and the sheets a bit crispy, so if you're that bothered, take your own!
The entertainment team were great. Really got the kids involved and was well organised. My daughter took part in Annabel Carmels cake decorating class which she thouroughly enjoyed (although some of the children should have been reminded to wash their hands)!
I agree that the restaurants and bars were over priced, but what do you expect? We're home in the UK and there is only so much Haven can give for free! The arcades were great although we spent a fortune!
The swimming pool was good, got a bit crowded and was impressed with the outside drop slide but was on the chilly side, they could do with a heated outdoor pool seen as our weather is never up to much! The local area was pretty too. The resort is at the top of a steep hill and as we are lazy, we drove down to the town but the beach (stone/shingle) is nice and there are some wonderful cafes and restaurants cheaper than at the site.
If you are booked to go to this resort, then take these awful reviews with a pinch of salt. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and if you chose a standard van where pets are allowed, then dont moan about the smell or the stains. For all the people who book a Sun £9.50 holiday, and sit here and winge - get over it!!!

Room Tip: Be friendly and polite to the staff and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you could get in...
