“Expensive but good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

The gallery has some lovely exhibits and the building itself is gorgeous. Each window is carefully placed so as to frame a lovely view.
The food from the cafe was delicious and well presented. Even my family visiting from London were impressed.
My only gripe is that £7 is a bit on the pricey side for entry. £5 would be more realistic.

“fantastic gallery, not so the cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

I visit the gallery reasonably regularly, have a favorite room in the gallery and have enjoyed most of the exhibitions. As a local the £2.00 entrance is absolutely reasonable. The building itself is airy, smells lovely (weird but I like the smell of it!) and the windows overlooking aspects of the beach and old town never fail to amaze. The gallery staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

The downside is the cafe. The facility itself is wonderful, the balcony overlooking the beach is a gift as many of the other great cafes in the old town are often in shade. The food and the service is lacking unfortunately and as a result I visit far less than I would. To combine the gallery and a decent cafe would result in my visiting far more often. The food is too expensive veering towards poor quality restaurant not good quality cafe, the menu doesn't change frequently enough, its just not hitting in the right place. Some (not all) of the staff are sullen and rude.

Please research some of the other great cafes in Hastings/St Leonards and match or better this and I for one will visit more often. The gallery is small and needs a fantastic cafe, balcony experience to justify an all round positive experience.

“Excellent gallery a smidge expensive and the cafe isn't great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012 via mobile

The gallery itself is very well laid out and the exhibits are excellent. I think £7 is a tad expensive but that's perhaps not really an issue. The cafe/restaurant is not brilliant the menu doesn't offer a great variety and its very expensive for what you get (wasn't impressed by the service either). Parking is easy and very close by so all-in-all a pretty good experience.

“Airy and relaxed”

Some really good artworks - my favourite was a Sickert view of a French town and a small Lowry also caught my eye. The main exhibition of abstracts was interesting too.

“Good but over-priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Architecturally, this is a real triumph. The design fits perfectly in its setting, visible but not intrusive along the Stade. Inside, the gallery spaces work a treat and it is a pleasure to visit. Not sure about the £7 entrance fee though – I think this will put off the majority of visitors to Hastings. Both the exhibitions I have visited were good and the permanent collection is interesting, but they do not justify this sum.

The biggest pity is that they have built in an excellent cafe which takes full advantage of the view (the people who designed the Turner at Margate might have thought about that) but you can only get into it if you have already visited the gallery. The cafe is being run to a high standard but I cannot see it hitting its potential through being inaccessible to most visitors to the town.
