The basket makers is a bit of a legend in Brighton, a good trad pub that is still going. Serving good ales and always busy. I've been going for years, not as a regular, but would pop in whenever passing. Decided to have a bit of dinner recently and couldn't have been more disappointed. The quality of the food was very poor, wet mushy cod for me and burnt offerings for the lady. When we pointed this out, treated very badly and eventually asked to leave, the chef wouldn't even face up to what he was charging us for. Pop over the road to the eagle, chef could learn a thing or two.
I'm not so much disappointed with the quality of the food, this happens, but in a long standing pub like this, the new and young people that are running the show should appreciate the generations that have come before them and a little bit of respect and less arrogance would go a long way.

Spent a day shopping at Brighton and was aware this pub had a good reputation for food - what a great place to eat and drink.
Very busy, absolutely buzzing, excellent food and reasonably priced wine.
Certainly worth a try

Friendly staff, good food and a cosy atmosphere - what else is there to say?

I had the lamb roast, which came with roasties, roast sweet potatoes, roast swedes, cauliflower cheese, carrots, sauteeed bacon, pea and leeks and a generous glug of gravy. My friend had the duck roast, which was the special of the day and came with the same trimmings. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would definitely recommend coming here on a Sunday. The cauliflower cheese and gravy were particularly outstanding and they didn't skimp out on the amont of meat either. They also had beef, chicken, pork belly and a nut roast to offer as well as a normal menu so there's definitely something for everyone. Prices for the roasts ranged from £10-11 - YUM!
