Description: This classically kooky, Tokyo-esque Japanese restaurant and delicatessen on the New Road in Brighton is the brainchild of acclaimed chef Mike Dodd and DJ Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim. With a minimialist, contemporary interior featuring handmade oak furniture, caliigraphy clad lanterns and an exclusive soundtrack tailor made by Cook, Oki-Nami has become a hit with local sushi connoisseurs, hipsters and Japanophiles. Located near the Theatre Royal opposite the Pavillion Gardens, Oki-Nami restaurant is renowned for its award-winning sushi; Japanese tapas; main courses such as the Suzuki Saffron sea bass served with a citrus sauce; desserts including the restaurant's famous green tea ice cream; and east-meets-west cocktails such as the Japanese Cherry Blossom Margarita.

“Delicious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013 via mobile

Had my first visit here and was really pleased with the dishes. The tuna wafu was cooked to perfection and it was a nice environment for a Saturday evening. Staff were excellent, service was good and was a really good expereience.

“Perfect in every way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Had a meal here for the first time with close family as part of my birthday celebrations and I have to say it was absolutely perfect. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was totally relaxing, the setting opposite the Royal Pavilion magical and the combination of discovering different foods and drinks such as Plum wine served over ice a very big plus. It was expensive although totally worth it but I understand if you were to use the tapas menu it works out very reasonable. I would definitely recommend it for a special occasion as I found it very memorable and was one of the highlights of my celebrations.

“Really very good...precise and authentic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

Pluses:

- Rapido and charming service
- authentic menu
- great location with views of the pavilion
- value pre-theatre menu on offer
- food was absolutely spot on - tasty and beautifully prepared
- cool bar upstairs as well

To improve:

- the sashimi selection was only salmon, tuna, mackerel and squid - nice and decent amounts, but could do with more variety

“The Best Japanese Restaurant in Brighton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Oki-Nami offers fantastically tasty, authentic Japanese food in a lovely restaurant. The menu includes all the normal Japanese dishes, plus some interesting extras and daily specials. We are one vegetarian/one pescetarian and there was plenty of choice for us both on the menu.

We shared three of the tapas style starters (Vegetarian Sushi, Vegetable Tempura and the Yasai Gyoza) and then main courses of the Oki Teri Tofu and Salmon Teriyaki. All the food was exceptionally fresh and cooked to perfection. I find with Japanese food that, when it’s done well, it can be exceptional, but when it’s done badly, it can be terrible. Oki-Nami is firmly in the first camp.

There was a wide drinks selection (cocktails, wines, beer and plenty of non-alcoholic options) and the service was excellent. There are a couple of other good Japanese restaurants we visit in the area but Oki-Nami has pipped them to my title of ‘best Japanese restaurant in Brighton’"

“Great food and drinks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

Went here on a Friday night, waitress was really friendly and knowleable. I enjoyed the cocktails I had and the food was excellent. We had the set menu which was really good value and I look forward to going back and trying other things.

I liked the little origami things which wrapped the chopsticks was a great touch.

My only issue was that as we were sat near the staircase which leads up to the bar it was quite noisy, not a problem for us but if we'd wanted a romantic dinner it might have spoilt it slightly. Other tables further in may not have this problem.
