I was unfortunately fooled into visiting this pub due to the good reviews on trip advisor and have never found anything soooooo wrong. I was staying in Brighton for the weekend with friends and it was my turn to take them out for 'casual' pub lunch somewhere. Having read the reviews, I figured it looked like a good bet so sauntered on over - the bar staff seemed friendly enough, although a little vague and the food was not up to my expectations of just decent honest home cooked pub grub, it tasted off and was greasy and left me feeling sick all afternoon... So, first problem encountered.. As it was the st. Patrick's weekend, we tried to locate a place in Brighton within staggering distance to watch a traditional Irish band playing (I like a pint of Guinness and a good Irish jig!) as opposed to just listening to Irish songs over the speaker which most places do. The only place we could find which advertised this for the saturday night was guess where... The cricketers...
So, reluctantly we settled down with a couple of pints and felt within the Irish spirit of things and as the band was setting up (whilst the pub was playing some dreadful archetypal loud music which you could barely talk over) we thought this was going to be a good night. The band started playing which was exactly what we were wanting to hear when they suddenly stopped and packed their instruments away?! I overheard the owner/manager? of the place asking them to leave as they were not playing loudly enough so people could hear them outside as well as in - his manor and attitude was embarrassing to watch and he didn't seem to care that his customers were overhearing this. The band looked mortified and quite frankly humiliated, I felt so sorry for them and especially when people around them were actually showing enjoyment and i felt they were being quite loud enough already. I confronted one of the bar staff as to what was going on and they informed me that the owner was drunk (the rugby had been on that day) and he had upset a number of other customer's that afternoon for whatever reason. As the band left, he put back on his horrendous overly loud music, went back to his beer and friends, laughing, whilst people walked out as this is not what they came to the pub to hear.
In a nutshell, I forgive a pub for poor food but not for aggressive, bad mannered and bully boy behaviour to customers (drunk or not) when you are providing them with business and neither myself or my friends will be returning. Absolutely appalling and disgraceful place and obviously very badly run.
