“third world plumming”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

we stayed for four nights d-b&b from 26th-30th of August 2013 Reception-dining room-lounges-4 star but bathrooms v-bad our bathroom flooded through ceiling on wed and was only repaired after being reported to Reception twice then again on Thursday morning it flooded again through the ceiling this time bringing down the light fittings . we didn't have a shower for 24hrs. We asked to see the manager and was told that although there were a number of managers none were available. We never got an explanation or an apology. It's time this hotel was re-rated downwards the room we had would have disgraced a 1 star hotel. Deffinately not recommended. The good point it had the food was v-good

Room Tip: choose a different Hotel

Thank you for your review.

I understand that my operations manager did speak to you and explained the water leak in the bathroom above.

I'd read quite a few of the reviews on here before we went to stay in Brighton & was a little worried after some of the bad reviews about the noise at night and the state of some of the rooms...but i have to say that i was very pleasantly surprised! I was a bit confused about which room to request after reading the tips on here - a sea view room for the view or a quiet room or a refurbished room! I decided on a refurbished room, which i didn't actually request until i checked in, and was told that i had already been given a refurbished room. The room was lovely. I'd also requested a large bed from the special request box that comes up when booking this hotel online...and despite only having booked a standard double room we got a king size bed. There was pin drop silence throughout the night & our room even had a ceiling fan. I had called in advance to enquire about parking and was told that you have to pay an extra £23/day for hotel parking or otherwise there is the Lanes car park on the adjacent street for a similar price. However, i did a bit of my own research beforehand and saw that you can park for free in most of the adjacent streets between 8pm-9am. These spaces were pretty easy to find. The nearest street to park on like this is Middle Street. The hotel is an excellent location, with a great view and at £63/night I would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

I have stayed at this hotel a few times with work and have stayed in various rooms. The hotel is good value for the price and its' location cannot be beaten. Unfortunately the excellent location means the hotel is surrounded by people having a good time and therefore making noise. The hotel does not have double glazing just old sash windows. In the quiet hours you can hear everything going on outside and I mean everything. I dread coming to this hotel because of the poor sleep quality. My advice would be to pay the extra and stay another hotel nearby. You may be financially worse off but the quality of your stay will make the extra expense worth it. Everything else about the hotel and staff is fine.

Room Tip: All outside rooms are incredibly noisey at night.

Thank you for your review.

Approximately 1/3 of the hotel is still of the old sash windows due to the listing status of the hotel. Planning permission has been re-submitted to change this. We have alreadt replaced windows to 45 bedrooms and hope you will try us again.

Stayed here on a Great Little Breaks deal for Sat. & Sun Night.
Brighton is a bit special & so is this hotel. Could not be better
situated for local attractions & the Rooms, Food & Service
are excellent. Even got a part-sea view to top things off.
The only downer... the new double-glazed windows should
be allowed to open more than they are restricted to...

Room Tip: Warning... Brighton is a mecca for Stag & Hen nights, so expect to be 'serenaded' in th...

The old Ship is situated on the main strip running alongside the beach. The staff are polite helpful and plentiful. Our room was on the 4th floor at the front with a sea view. Spacious, with a very comfortable bed, ironing and coffee/tea making facilities, arm chairs and desk. The only problem is if you want to sleep at night. The double glazing is helpless against the night time noise. Hen and stag parties in abundance making their way home in the early hours plus on the Sunday night the delights of a nearby club hammering out house and garage music til the early hours. If this doesnt keep you awake I am sure the emergency service vehicles with sirens blaring will. The breakfast tries hard to make up for it with a plentiful buffet catering for the full cooked fan and the continental alike. With cereals, fresh and dried fruits, Danish pastries, a great selection of jams and marmalades, the usual sausages, eggs, bacon, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes, fried bread, toast and help yourself drink machines dispensing mugs of your favourite coffees be it Americano or cappucino. A very impressive display. Underground garage with safe and secure parking, at a price. Very good location for everything apart from a good nights sleep.

Room Tip: Dont take sea view if you wish to sleep

Positives: * We were able to book just a two night stay over the bank holiday weekend whereas a lot of hotels were imposing a minimum of three.
* The room was spacious and had everything I needed
* The lady taking names at Breakfast was friendly and very helpful. I saw her personally helping an elderly guest to her seat and continue to assist with retrieving items from the buffet for her.
* Our room was nice and quiet (although this was because it looked out onto some kind of ventilation area within the hotel!)

Negatives: * The bathroom looked like it had undergone a refurbishment as it had new tiles however the window sill was dirty and covered in flaking paint. Other parts of the room also could have done with a repaint and it felt a bit tatty.
* Room was a bit hot so we had to open the window. This was fine for us but probably not for anyone facing out onto the street!
