“Buckets and Spades!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

Bath and basin plugs that dont't quite stop the water from slowly leaking down the drain, floorboards creaking more than an elderly maiden Aunts bones! Did any of this spoil the great enjoyment of our stay? Not a bit of it!

If you want a seaside hotel in the traditional style, the Old Ship has character by the bucketload and charm in spades! No,it is certainly not a modern sterile glass and chrome monolith. If that's your wish go elsewhere! But if you want to enjoy a sincere warm welcome from the staff booking you in through to the care and attention of the dining room and breakfast staff, then the Old Ship should be a destination you visit.

Yes there may be cracks in the tile grouting, and evidence where previous fixtures have been replaced, but everywhere is spotlessly clean and it is a very charming old building.

We were fortunate to have a comfortable room in the centre front of the hotel. Equally fortunate on first entering was the sun streaming in making it a very pleasant place to sit, enjoy a glass of wine, take in the sea view and generally 'people watch'

Perhaps not so fortunate the next day when a stubborn sea mist and breeze sought to find the absent double or central window secondary glazing! But hey, next day glorious sun again and we can forgive such a minor shortcoming!

We enjoyed dinner as part of our 'package' attended by friendly and helpful 'James', and in our view the breakfast spread for both quality and presentation could not have been better.

All in all we consider our stay to have been most enjoyable and good value for money. It is certainly a venue marked as a 'must return' for us when we next visit Brighton.

Room Tip: worth ensuring a front sea view room

I attended the hotel for my sons weekend stag party. There was a mix up with the booking but it did get sorted out. The hotel is a little dated and the rooms aren't palatial, but everything in the room worked ok and the beds were very comfortable. The reception staff were really helpful and polite.

The breakfast was basic but there was plenty of it. The hotel parking is well worth it as the lanes parking next door is normally full at the weekend and if you want to park for free you would need your walking boots as its almost a mile away!!

overall for the price it was good value for money great for a weekend. if you want peace and quiet get a room at the rear!!

Room Tip: For peace and quiet dont get a room on lower floors at the front.

We stayed here with some friends weekend of 19th April for 2 nights. We arrived around 6pm and after checking in went up to our allocated room. The room had not been cleaned and we had checked in late! Went back to reception and they allocated us another room. This room was clean but very warm so we needed the window open all night. It was very nosy as the hotel has lots of hen and stag parties booked in. At breakfast on the Satruday morning we explained that we had very little sleep all night due to the noise outside and they duly moved us to the 5th floor with a sea view.....a free upgrade which was nice of them. The staff are very polite and the rooms are clean. The breakfast was nice and plentiful. We enjoyed out weekend in Brighton, never been before but would go back but would maybe pick a smaller hotel away from the sea front that does not have hen and stag parties in.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is high up if on the front as it is very noisy with party goers. If you dont lik...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

I stayed in this hotel for two nights in April so I could run the Brighton marathon. I really liked the hotel which looks nice and as a bit of a history buff I was very interested to read the history of the hotel however we unfortunately had a comedy of errors which ruined the relaxing marathon build up I was hopeful for.

Our adventure started after walking to the hotel from the station in the pouring rain (and no I don't blame the hotel for that rather I wanted to explain that we were all a little tetchy when we arrived.) We checked in and it all seemed to be OK but when we got to our room our key wouldn't work and it sounded like there were people in there. I left my wife and daughter in the hall and rushed back down to reception - unfortunately we had to wait behind someone who was booking in 17 rooms, eventually I managed to get someone's attention and they confirmed our room number and asked if I would go back up to check, I went back up and knocked on the door and sure enough there was someone else already there. I returned to reception who said they had called the room and that the people in there were from the wrong room - would have been nice if they had phoned before I went up there! We then had to wait in reception whilst they found us another room which was trying with a wet and angry 3 year old but eventually we got a new room so that was OK.

The worst thing was just the noise from the street, I know the hotel has been there long before the ignoramuses who think screaming in the street is acceptable as that seems to be the default for modern Brighton some double glazing would be appreciated.

Other small niggles were that the toiletries were not replenished and when we asked for them they asked us to collect them from reception, the floor in the restaurant was still dirty from dinner when we went in for breakfast and when they checked us out I had to argue with them to get them to charge me for our room service, which all just added to the feeling that they didn't know what they are doing.

So I would recommend this hotel if you are going out drinking but if you are after a quiet nights sleep you may want to stay away from the sea front.

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry you found issues with the key and noise from outside the hotel. Whilst we do have double glazing in most rooms due to the listed nature of the building planning permission has been difficult to obtain to put double glazing into the hotel. I am pleased to confirm that we have now trialled new acoustic glass and the initial results back from out sound tests have been positive and are now planing a schedule to roll this out

I had not stayed in the Old Ship for many years so it was good to return to Brighton's oldest hotel. The location is excellent and the hotel is typical of an old building, our room was excellent the staff were good. I enjoyed the breakfast, the dinner menu is very restricted and many of the dishes had an extra cost as we were on a DBB rate, I was a little disappointed with dinner.

First time to use The Old Ship Hotel, and would recommend, however we paid for an upgrade for a sea view and it was a newly refurbed room, it was worth doing. The room very clean and comfortable, Friendly and helpfull staff, will use again We did have one minus Breakfast was not great, it was a little too do it yourself.

Really enjoyed my stay at the hotel, the staff were welcoming and courteous, and the location is excellent, right on the sea front and near the centre of Brighton, so everything was nearby
Many thanks for an enjoyable stay
