Bath and basin plugs that dont't quite stop the water from slowly leaking down the drain, floorboards creaking more than an elderly maiden Aunts bones! Did any of this spoil the great enjoyment of our stay? Not a bit of it!
If you want a seaside hotel in the traditional style, the Old Ship has character by the bucketload and charm in spades! No,it is certainly not a modern sterile glass and chrome monolith. If that's your wish go elsewhere! But if you want to enjoy a sincere warm welcome from the staff booking you in through to the care and attention of the dining room and breakfast staff, then the Old Ship should be a destination you visit.
Yes there may be cracks in the tile grouting, and evidence where previous fixtures have been replaced, but everywhere is spotlessly clean and it is a very charming old building.
We were fortunate to have a comfortable room in the centre front of the hotel. Equally fortunate on first entering was the sun streaming in making it a very pleasant place to sit, enjoy a glass of wine, take in the sea view and generally 'people watch'
Perhaps not so fortunate the next day when a stubborn sea mist and breeze sought to find the absent double or central window secondary glazing! But hey, next day glorious sun again and we can forgive such a minor shortcoming!
We enjoyed dinner as part of our 'package' attended by friendly and helpful 'James', and in our view the breakfast spread for both quality and presentation could not have been better.
All in all we consider our stay to have been most enjoyable and good value for money. It is certainly a venue marked as a 'must return' for us when we next visit Brighton.
