“GREAT POSITION BUT IN NEED OF SOME TLC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

This hotel enjoys a fabulous position overlooking the sea with the added benefit of on-site, reasonably priced parking, although limited.

We were only staying one night so went for a basic room without paying extra for a sea view. Unfortunately, we had to return twice to reception because the "key" didn't work. We were immediately upgraded to a sea view room which showed great customer service. The room we were given originally was accessed through a maze of cramped corridors and doors and probably had no window!!

Our new sea view room was nicely furnished and had probably been refurbished recently - good curtains, carpet and bed linen. However, there was a sign next to the heated towel rail warning us that it was very hot. In fact it was stone cold and we were unable to even turn it on!! My husband wanted a shave and ran the hot tap in the sink for five minutes and the water was still cold! I was told by reception staff that the tap had to be left running for at least ten minutes because of the hotel's ancient plumbing. What a waste of water and why not put up a sign to inform guests of the necessity of doing this.

This sounds like a real moan, but the staff were very nice, the breakfast was enormous and freshly cooked and we would actually stay there again, but would pay the extra for a superior room.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a superior room with a sea view, although could be noisy in summer as windows not...

Many thanks for your review.

I am pleased to say that all our rooms have windows and sorry your keys did not work. As the newish General Manager here I was concerned to read your comments regarding the water and am currently looking into this further as it is most certainly a waste.

I am hope that we have the pleasure of welcoming you back again.

This lovely traditional hotel on the coast of Brighton beach provides a pleasant stay. While the hotel is not new and the rooms are not very big, the beds are great and there is enough space for your stuff in a big cupboard. In addition the service was very good and the breakfast that was provided was wonderful. What made the breakfast extra special was the service by offered in the breakfast room by local personnel who made sure that every guest received exactly what they wanted.

Room Tip: great bed and a big cupboard for clothes.

Thank you for your review.

Being an older hotel we have rooms of varying sizes which all add to the character of the building. Your great comments regarding the team will be passed on.

Thank you once again.

Stayed here for a girls weekend of shopping and nights out. Great location right on the seafront . Close to the Lanes for shopping and restaurants. Rooms very hot. Rooms "tired" as are the bathrroms which still have plastic loo seats! Breakfast ok and plenty of it. Check in and check out slow. Only one member of staff on even though the hotel was really busy with Xmas parties etc. Would stay again for the location but only if it was for 1 or 2 nights max.

Thank you for your review.

Plans are currently underway for a refurbishment of the hotel since becoming part of the Puma Hotels Collection. I am sorry that plastic toilet seats are not to your liking.

Just had a fantastic weekend in Brighton and chose to stay at The Old Ship, we found it to be a lovely old place with very friendly and helpful staff, especially the folk in charge of breakfast which I would like to add was superb! The location of the Hotel is fantastic aswell, right on the seafront with all shopping, pubs and nightlife a short walk away, unfortunately there were a few negatives to be found during our stay, firstly upon check in we were given a room on the second floor, we made our way through the maze like corridors and eventually found our room, we opened the door and were instantly aware of how cold the room was, we checked the radiators and to our amazement they were on full also the view from the window was that of a fire escape, which is never good!! I went back down to reception to inform them about the temperature of our room and was informed that I could upgrade to a room with a sea view for an extra £20 per night which we duly did, this room was on first inspection a lot better with a lovely view of the sea, it wasn't until we actually walked around the room that we noticed the unbelievable noise the floorboards made, I mean every single footstep was greeted with an almighty creak, now I know the hotel is old but this issue really needs addressing! Another slight moan would be that on the morning we checked out we had absolutely no hot running water in our room so no shower could be had just a stone cold wash of your face in the sink, as we were about to check out I kind of let this slip!! All in all though we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Old Ship and would definitely stay there again now we know what to expect!!

I booked this hotel and paid a discounted price so was very pleased when we finally got in to our room. However, there is no parking for hotel guests despite is clearly saying there is on the hotels website. The car park was completely full when we arrived because they don't reserve spaces for guests, they let anyone park. And even if you can get a space they charge £23 to park! We ended up finding a space in a private car park about 20 minutes walk away and had to pay £30.

Thank you for your review.

I am pleased you enjoyed yor stay.

We have approximatly 50 spaces in the hotel car park and I assure you that is for hotel use only. However we allocate spaces on a 1st come 1st served basis as this is the fairest way to manage it.

I hope the parking does not put you off from staying with us again.

The Old Ship has all the charm of the oldest hotel in Brighton. Breakfast is good, bed is super comfortable, if you can sleep. Sadly other than rebuild the hotel the floorboards are very very old and creak at every step. that means if you spend a Saturday night as we did you will not get much sleep. Perhaps it is quieter during the week. Staff were charming.

Room Tip: If you get a room on the top floor it might be quieter. Or go to bed late if you go in summer.
