“classic seaside hotel, funkified....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

This is a classic old seafront family hotel, renovated to look like a classic old seafront family hotel! The floorboards creak, the furniture's freestanding not built-in, and the restaurant's in the basement.... just like you remember as a kid at the seaside...

The location's very good, just down the seafront from the Grand, so unless you're visiting with elderly relatives everywhere from North Laines to the pier is easily walkable. The seafront is quite a busy road so there's some street noise, and on weekend evenings the London clubbers are out all night - not a real nuisance unless you're hypersensitive to noise, but equally don't expect unadulterated sounds-of-the-sea as your background music.

Check-in was fine, quick friendly and efficient. I'd booked a superior room (all that was left - you select your room on the website as you book) which was big and overlooked the seafront (right in front of the shell of the old West pier, in fact). The bed was soft but comfortable enough, there was tea/coffee facilities, and a big bathroom with a jacuzzi bath (but only a hand-held shower). There was plenty of hot water, although (on a typical English June day) some background heating would have been nice. The theme of the room was art deco so the furniture was original and memorable! There was good wi-fi throughout the hotel, free and easy to log on.

Breakfast was very good - a wide choice of hot food, and a modest buffet. The coffee was good and free flowing. The waitresses all seemed to be language students, practising their English. One particularly cute Chinese girl managed to construct a whole conversation around refilling my coffee cup - always helps to start the day with an inner smile!

So if you want cookie-cutter rooms, a nice new building, and a frequent-stay programme, you'll regret staying here. Otherwise... a great hotel for a fun seaside break!

Staff were very friendly and most helpful with bags. We asked if possible for upgrade and got a fabulous room called the Pavilion with ocean views and four poster bed! Easy walking to everywhere. You don't need a car. In fact you are better off without one as parking is atrocious.

Room Tip: Ask for upgrade if available

We chose the granville for its location and price (about the best we could find within easy striking distance of everything one could want in brighton) and we weren't disappointed by either. The hotel, being a smaller affair, included a few extras in with the price. We didn't have to pay extra for breakfast (more on that later) which a lot of the other hotels in the area don't include in the price, and when we were checking in we were informed that there was free internet access on a couple of computers tucked away on the ground floor and a free dvd library that we could select from to use in our room (on the dvd player provided). Reasonable selection of dvds to choose from, although, as we are film fans, we struggled to find something we hadn't seen already!).

If you're looking for a simple room which is a clone of every other room, go to the travel lodge round the corner. This place has 24 rooms, all of which are individually themed and decorated. Looking at the website, it looks like our room (mrs fitzherbert) was one of the smaller rooms, and it was cozy, but there was room for the 2 of us. If I had to complain about anything I would say it could do with a going over with a screw driver (a few of the fittings were coming loose) and some fresh wallpaper (some scratches near the bed). Also, the bath (with its jacuzzi jets) only had a hand held shower (not a problem) but no shower curtain, making showering difficult! Be warned, the water is very hot!
We were a little concerned that we would be kept awake by the lift next to our room, but being on the top floor, we didn't have much passing traffic and in fact, as the title suggests, we both had the best nights sleep we have had in a hotel for years! This despite the fact that we were staying on a friday and saturday night in stag/hen party central!
Breakfast was a delightful affair in a bright and contemporary room on the lower ground floor. Buffet continental breakfast and waitress served cooked food. Traditional english, vege and even vegan breakfasts on offer in addition to 3 different types of eggs benadict (I can recommend the smoked salmon) and even kippers, to name a few. The hot chocolate was lovely as well (As a non tea/coffee drinker I get to sample a lot of hot chocolates and many don't live up to the mark, this place got it right!). The waiting staff were lovely.
All in all a very pleasant stay and next time we are back in brighton we will be looking up the granville again.

I have just returned from a nights stay at the Granville. The hotel is located directly opposite the West pier. We stayed in the Japanese room which was 'very' small though I feel the other standard sea view rooms will be of similar size. It had a great sea view and a lovely bathroom. The jacuzzi bath was a nice touch. The bed was a small double but very comfortable. We had a flatscreen tv with very poor picture quality and only 10 channels to choose from. All the other standard amenities were included Tea & coffee making facilities, iron, basic toiletries etc. There was a small selection of old movie DVD's to borrow free from reception. Breakfast was nice. Had a good selection to choose from which was freshly cooked. There was also cereals, juice and toast so you definately will not starve in the mornings. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Overall, we enjoyed our stay though we felt there are nicer more spacious bedrooms in other hotels in Brighton for a similar price. If you are looking to stay here, make sure you check the hotels website as they give a detailed description of each room.

This was a last minute booking and we were extremely pleased with the choice. The hotel is just opposite the beach and minutes walk from the town. We stayed in the Lewes room, small but unique because the bed was set on glass bricks which lit up when the bedroom light was switched on, as did the glass bricks round the headboard and the large wall mirror. This made the room lovely and bright and quite spectacular. The bed was very comfortable and clean and we had a good night's sleep. the dining room was very modern and clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and there was plenty of choice of breakfast. The cooked breakfast was delicious, good quality and lovely and hot, there was also a good selection of cereals, toast and fruit juces, as much tea or coffee as you wanted, freshly brewed and brought to the table.

We would definitely book the Granville again. Janet and Ken Cheshire

Good location. Was placed in a newly refurbed room which was very nice and quite plush!! However, sound proofing between rooms was quite poor, loud TV till early morning thank god nothing intimate going on (would have clearly heard, gods above!) was good value, with very friendly and helpful staff. Good value for money!!!

I stayed in The Granville for one night for business. My room was small but very nice, it had a really good shower in the bathroom. One of my colleagues was upgraded to a large room with a four poster bed, jacuzzi bath and balcony overlooking the seafront - I was very jealous. The staff were very friendly and helpful, a couple of the lights in my room were not working and it was sorted out straight away. The breakfast was good and served very quickly. I'd definitely like to go back here for a weekend and stay in the large room!
