“Just as well it was sub £100 for the room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

We've been here a few times since 2008; it was tatty then and, nothing having been done to it, it is even more tatty now.

We were upgraded as Platinum Rewards members to a sea view room. That was nice. The staff were efficient and friendly. The bed was comfortable and the plumbing worked. Room temperature control also worked. So what was wrong?

Where shall I start?

1/
Water leaked from the ceiling lamp into the bath. Doesn't anybody notice this very obvious thing? The ceiling was ravaged and had obviously been like that for a long time.

2/
There is a desk in the room. Both power points were taken up - one for the kettle, the other going to a block on the floor. There was one more power point on the other side of the room at floor level. So a lot of fumbling around to plug a laptop in.

3/
There is no fridge in the room. They've stopped doing the mini-bar but not left the fridge there for customers to put their water into.

4/
One look at the furniture tells you that it's been there since Rome fell. The veneer on the MDF table was bubbling. It was tatty in the extreme.

This hotel is owned by a company other than the Intercontinental Hotels Group; it is a franchise operation. How on earth does IHG allow this hotel to carry its name?

It would appear that neither company fully understands the word "quality".

My wife and I arrived and checked in, the fellow at the front desk was very polite and friendly. We thought we had made a good choice when choosing a place to stay, sadly, things went downhill from there. We paid £18 additionally to park in the underground parking lot. The lot is a warren with liquids oozing and dripping from the ceiling. Our room was on the "Executive" floor and was dingy and in need of paint and plaster. When we went to check out, we were told we would have to pay. We informed them that we booked through Hotels.com and that they already took payment. They told us we would have to contact Hotels.com to prove to them that we have paid. I would think that after showing them our confirmation email that they would call Hotels.com to sort it out, but we had to sort it out ourselves. The breakfast was very tasty though. Cannot recommend this place, not when there are so many hotels in the area to choose from, and not for the money we paid to stay. Not good value.

I read the other reviews and my heart sank when I saw what people said but my partner and I had a wonderful trip to brighton. We came down on friday morning, parked in the NCP car park just round the corner as wasn't sure if you could park at the hotel before check in. (Overall cost for parking was £22 but we were there for over 24 hours). Spent a lovely day in Brighton, and checked in around 3pm. Check in was quick, friendly and at this point we pre booked breakfast for the next day. It was a little steep at £10 each, but the breakfast the next day was worth every penny, cereals, hot food and pastries - perfect.

We had booked an executive room with a sea view - the room was HUGE. Biggest room i've ever stayed in, and the view was amazing. The bed was comfy, with a lovely flat screen tv. The bathroom was clean, the bath was to die for and it was a very well kept hotel.

Do not listen to the bad reviews, but do spend a little more on getting a nicer room - all worth it in the end.

Booked a weekend away with top secret hotel with last minute. Was not aware where I was staying until I paid. Was disappointed when I read the reviews. Was surprised how "ok" it was. Quiet room with a partial see view. Staff polite and pleasant. Would probable stay again. Car Park charge £18 pound a night, council car park £25 a night park in Hove for free and if staying either walk the two miles back or get a cab staving yourself £54.

Room Tip: room facing Little Preston Street are extremely quiet

I was worried about staying here due to the negative reviews. Check in was a little bit slow as only one person on but they were friendly. The room was fine, I was expecting a dated room but it was a nice large room. The bathroom was also modern and bright. The parking charges are a bit steep at £18 a night, as paying guests they could at least charge a reasonable price.
I can only presume that this hotel has either gone through or is going through a modernisation.
Overall everything about my stay was fine.

Room Tip: I had room 119 which was fine but had no view so if your bothered about a view don't choose 119.

Booked an Executive seaview room as part of a birthday celebration in Brighton. As others have remarked, this hotel is most definitely not of the standard you would expect from a Holiday Inn and at £100+ per night, poor value for money.

Tired I can accept as long as it is clean. Our room (409) was certainly tired and (apart from the carpet) clean. But so much was broken: the room lights switch didn't work, the washbasin plug was missing, hook behind the bathroom door broken, shower curtain rail hanging off. Worst off all the heating did not work (although we did not discover that until it was too late to do anything about it).

We reported the heating on leaving for sightseeing in the morning. On our return in the afternoon not only had the heating not been fixed, the room had not been serviced either. We complained and were moved to another room. While still tired, everything worked. This is not what you expect from a Holiday Inn. (If we had been in the second room from the start this would be a different review - the management need to get a grip on the quality of the rooms quickly).

I gather the hotel is due a refurbishment, although I see this has been stated for the last couple of months, but there appear to be no signs that anything is happening.

On the plus side, the bed was clean and comfortable, the staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast selection is good.

Room Tip: Suggest you ask to see the room before parting with money
