“Great find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

We wandered in to this place without a reservation on a busy Saturday afternoon and asked if they could accommodate us, which they did, very quickly. The food was really enjoyable and my husband even ordered a pudding (unheard of usually!) and deemed it to be fabulous. The area it is located in is not the best, but we would certainly come again - good food, friendly staff and a real buzz in the restaurant. They even allow dogs (which we are totally happy with) but that may not suit everybody. If they are well behaved, we have no problems with the concept. Give the Ginger Dog a try - it will be worth it!

“Burns night supper”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

We booked mid afternoon after seeing tweets from 'Ginger' about Burns night supper options. There was a special starter (inc haggis), or a main (also inc haggis). Both came with a shot of Whiskey to get those wanting it. I went for the mutton hot pot which was lovely in the biting cold weather - served in an individual casserole - with some taste red cabbage and carrots on the side. The mutton was absolutely tender, the carrots had 'bite', and the red cabbage was tasty. My husband, Ian, went for the haggis main. It was beautifully presented, and I suspect that the parsnip puree was particularly lovely. We shared a desert - the bread and butter pudding with ginger and kafir lime ice cream. The ice cream was very rich and luscious - but larger lumps of ginger than I might have expected. The bread and butter pudding was buttery and warming but I was expecting it to have rather more flavour than it did.

Swapping Whiskey for a soft drink was accommodated without a fuss, and I had two glasses of red wine. The wine list is not expensive. Also liked the water and bread with the offer of more, and that the 'Ginger' chain gets involved in local businesses - we noted they have the tea from Metro deco, the oil is local, and so are the ales.

Mixed bag of customers and a vibrant (not excessive) atmosphere. Would recommend to couples and small groups.

“Wouldn't go back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

We went this evening for a meal and drinks with friends. Nice cosy pub, seating was uncomfortable, open fire. Only two veggie options and one of them had to be changed to actually be veggie (Parmesan). I had gnocchi - under seasoned, under cooked butternut squash, very dry, small portion - over priced for the plate at about £12. Other veggie option ordered by my friend, the taster plate - very plain food you could whip up at home. Steaks ordered by two others - tiny portions, overpriced. Waited ages for drinks - ordered a vodka and coke when my food arrived, drink arrived after I'd finished eating 30 mins later. Desserts were fine, as were the cocktails ordered (brought over by bar staff). Apart from one waitress who was very slow with orders, the staff were friendly. All in all poor show - will never go back, experience was so poor due mainly to poor food and it was expensive, won't even try the others in the ginger chain.

“Loveliest cosiest pub and great food to top it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013 via mobile

This pub is small and cosy. Really great atmosphere especially on a cold rainy day. The fireplace is lush. The food is really impressive - it's not cheap but when the food is good I don't mind paying for it. And the service is brilliant, can't say that about many pubs.

“Haven't tried the food, but love to stop for drinks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013 via mobile

Having recently moved to this part of Brighton I've had the pleasure of popping in to the Ginger Dog for a few drinks on cold winter nights. The price of beer is average for Brighton and being able to sit by an open fire while you sip a cold lager is a beautiful thing.

I can't say anything about the food but intend to rectify that as soon as possible as the atmosphere in the Ginger Dog is great and the menu always looks great and quite reasonable in terms of price.
