Booked as part of a deal so was looking forward to a bargain weekend although wasn't sure what to expect when reading previous reviews. However, we were pleasantly suprised when arriving at Umi Hotel. The hotel is perfectly situated on the sea front, minutes away from the infamous 'Lanes', Brighton Pier and town centre. Our room was the Superior Executive Sea View Room and we were really pleased with the room and the view. The bathroom, although compact, was clean and had everything we needed, although the shower was a little tempramental. Staff were friendly and helpful both on reception at at the bar. I was a little concerned when booking in to note some groups of young men and/or females probably as part of stag and hen parties, and was reassured by the reception staff that group parties are booked onto the ground floor to avoid disturbing other guests - I'm a light sleeper and I certainly wasn't disturbed in my room on the second floor. The hotel provides a ticket which allows 60% discount at a local NCP car park. Breakfast was reasonable, better for being included as part of B&B. Some of the carpets a little tired, but overall, I think the Umi is a good value for money hotel in a perfect location.

Room Tip: Executive Superior Sea View rooms are lovely and in a quiet area of the hotel

As far as a low cost hotel goes its fine however, the rooms could do with a fresh lick of paint and would be better if the window opened wider as the room was very stuffy!
Good location for the beach and the lanes for shopping!

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent stay. We run a rolling maintenance program redecorating our rooms, constantly refurbishing as required. The windows are restricted due to health and safety so we are unable to allow them to be opened any further. We have an ample supply of fans available for any guest who contacts reception and notifies us of their discomfort.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave your comments, I look forward to welcoming you back to umi Brighton.

We arrived at the hotel at 13:30 on a Friday afternoon, check in wasn't until 15:00, however, Liam checked if our room was available and checked us in straight away. He couldn't have been more helpful, made us very welcome and recommended restaurants we might like to visit/ the best areas to visit in Brighton.

Our room was on the top floor with a sea view, the room was spacious with appropriate decor. The bathroom was a little tired but adequate.

The location is perfect, a short walk from the pier and the Lanes. Breakfast is very good, as much as you can eat, general public can also use the restaurant at £4.99 for as much as you can eat full english, worthwhile trying even if your not stopping at the hotel.

The hotel doesn't have its own car park, however, the hotel get 50% off parking at the local NCP which makes parking OK, its a 2 minute walk to the hotel.

We've stayed at several hotels on the sea front, this is as good as any of them, good value for money. The night club opposite the hotel can be noisy, not a problem if you like a few drinks before bed.

I will stay at this hotel again when we visit Brighton if the price is competitive.

Room Tip: Sea vew top floor was excellent, choose a room at the back of the hotel if you want to avoid late ni...

Review from the point of view of a young couple......
This was our second visit to the UMI hotel and we still love it just as much as the first time we visited!
Rooms have always been extremely clean (hotel generally always looks very clean too) and rooms are very quirky love the quotes on the walls!
hotel staff always polite and straight forward.
There is no messing around - which we love! Check in and check out has always been very fast and always been totally impressed with the room we've been given.
Both times we have had a sea view and I just don't think you can fault it as the windows are massive and view is very pretty.
The little bay restaurant next door has to be the highlight of our stay both times as it is SO unique and food is AMAZING and very very cheap!
I don't know anywhere else where you could experience sitting pretty much ON the beach, in a theatre, eating amazing food and at a very low price - perfect!
Breakfast in the little bay the next day always been nice, cannot fault it, amazing choice, fresh juice and again, depending where you book usually part of the price you pay which again is amazing as you would probably pay £5-£10 for this if it was somewhere else.
UMI hotel is very reasonably priced as well.... good for a short break or a last minute getaway!!!!
I can't understand all these bad reviews....... you're not paying £200+ a night, you're not staying in a 5 star hotel, you get what you pay for and what you do get, is very very good!
Don't change UMI! we love ya!

One might suppose that a hotel in an imposing old building on the seafront at Brighton, next door to the Grand, would be good. Sadly not true at all. The UMI is the sort of place where you have to pay the full fee on arrival, because probably after the first night you will be desperate to get away to somewhere better. It's the sort of place that does not provide soap or tissues or reading lights or bottled water in the rooms, and where the lounge is dominated by an enormous flat-panel TV that is tuned to CNN 24 hours a day. Most extraordinary is the theatre in which breakfast is served, in what seems like a bordello with private cubicles furnished in scarlet velvet and gilding. Apparently it is meant for opera performances in the evening, but first thing in the morning it does nothing to enhance stringy bacon, overcooked sausages and disintegrating eggs. My advice is to pay the extra and go to the Grand.

Room Tip: Go to the Grand next door.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent stay. I was sorry to read you were disappointed with the accommodation provided to you. I would like to take this opportunity to respond to the comments made.

Umi Brighton is a AA 3 star property assessed accordingly to gain such an award, and reviewed very recently. They review all our services and facilities, dictating minimum standards required to achieve this honour. I'm happy to report that on all counts we have met their standards and even exceeded on others. As such the facilities you elude to as missing, aside from the soap where we provide liquid hand soap and shower gel in each room, are not a requirement for a 3 star property. Furthermore, we pride ourselves on being completely transparent with all our customers, and regardless of the legal implications, from a customer service perspective would never want to mislead any guest as to our standards, services and facilities. We work hard with all our market providers to ensure all online descriptions are accurate so guests are more than informed as to the level of accommodation they will be provided with prior to booking.

It is a standard hotel practice in all hotels to ensure that a form of payment is made prior to guests checking in. This can either in as an authorisation to a card, or in the form of full payment. We have carefully assessed our practices regarding taking full payment on arrival and consulted with guests as to their preference. When faced with having to pay on arrival, thereby allowing a smooth, hassle-free check out, as opposed to a delayed departure owing to completing payments the overwhelming majority prefer for the former.

Unfortunately I fail to see why having a TV in a public area tuned to a news channel is any cause for concern or warrants a mention in an online review. Had the channel displayed been inappropriate then of course this should be addressed, but by your own admission the TV is tuned to a news channel and can bear no deleterious effect on a guests stay.

I'm afraid having never visited a bordello I am unable to provide any comparisons between their decoration and that shown in Little Bay, so I will have to yield to your knowledge. What I can say is that Little Bay's decor, food, and service is loved by thousands of people, as shown by them being in the top 3% of Restaurants in Brighton, ranked 21 out of 619. Of course, there is no excuse for poor quality breakfast items being provided, and we actively check the standards daily, and should any lapse in the high standard be brought to our attention it is rectified immediately.

In my opinion, and of course Trip Advisor is solely based on reviewers opinions, your closing statement frames your disappointment. If you want to pay the extra, which often is quite a considerable difference, to have amenities such as tissues in your room, then there are many 4 start hotels in Brighton that can provide this. However, if you want 3 star clean, comfortable accommodation, in a fantastic location, with great service, at competitive prices then umi Brighton offers exactly this, and presents itself accordingly.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent stay.

Kind Regards,

Hotel Management
