We were due to stay in this hotel for one night on the 16th July 2011. We have backpacked around the world and have stayed in some very basic accommodation before, but we can honestly say that this is the most unpleasant hotel we have ever used. We would hate for any other unsuspecting visitors to Brighton to experience this hotel!
We were received by quite an unhappy, although very pleasant, receptionist at the allocated time. The room wasn’t ready but we were more than happy to wait. She registered us and asked us to pay £60 before we were allowed to see the room. We thought it was £50 so she advised us to speak to the owner. She gave us the keys and showed us to our door on the second floor. She left very quickly as we were appalled by the state of the room.
We opened the blinds, which immediately fell from the wall to reveal a smashed window. Along side this, we found the cold water tap did not work, mould on the ceiling, yellow stains on the bed covers, broken bed, possible evidence of drug use in the drawers and an electrical socket coming away from the wall. We went down stairs to complain but there was no-one to be found so we left to get some fresh air.
About, 30 mins later a very upset receptionist rang us to say we had to return immediately to pay and that the boss was very angry. We arrived about 5 mins later to find the receptionist in tears and the owner at the desk. We then informed him of how unhappy we were with the condition of the room, to which he replied "do not criticise my hotel. You must pay £60. If not, leave immediately. If you don't like the state of the room, then go elsewhere." No apology, no reasoning and very rude. He shouted at us as we went up the stairs. When we reached the room to collect our things the receptionist burst in to tears, clearly very scared of the owner.
Following this we went to the Tourist Information office who informed us that the hotel was not graded and therefore not inspected; so they advised us to contact Trading Standards (which we have done). Although no money changed hands, we feel there is a clear health and safety issue concerning this hotel and the business licence should be reviewed immediately; the owner clearly has no respect for his staff or his guests.
