“Very expensive bar”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Yes the bar is very cool & stylish but 2 bottle largers cost £7.40 so go elsewhere if just having a casual drink.

“Cocktail making class is the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2012 via mobile

I went here for my 30th for a cocktail making class with 8 friends, what a class so worth every penny we made loads of cocktails and the knowledge of the bar staff was very impressive, far better than we were expecting. A full 2 hours of making cocktails and by this I mean that we got to go behind the bar and make them our selves , great fun and tasty. So much information about how and why each cocktail is made. The best part of the evening was setting fire to the bar at the end. I would highly recommend this class and this bar

“Good atmosphere and cocktails, but closes a bit too early”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2012

This is the hotel bar of the fantastic myHotel Brighton. Good atmosphere, nice cocktails and helpful, skilled staff at the bar. My only negative points are the slightly expensive prices for some of the cocktails (although they are pretty big, to be fair) and the fact that the bar closes quite early for a party place like Brighton.

“A poor hotel bar with delusions of the 18th Century... (that's 1701-1799)”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

When you read about this place 'the management' project it as achingly cool, feng shui-ed to the max - and a place where the 'elite' go to sip mai-tais and generally do whatever it is the elite do in Brighton. You feel as if there just might be a frisson of celebrity hanging around the corner too...
So I was a bit surprised when I spent a weekday evening here and attempted to soak up all that 'uber-sphere'. And that's the problem - the reality is there is absolutely no atmosphere, despite the cool fittings, black shirted bar- staff and flashing TV-monitors. The knotty truth is that the bar opens directly on to the foyer of the hotel and that's right on the street - and that means any atmosphere is generally sucked out the door - you feel you are at best in the bar at LAX waiting for a plane that is never going to arrive. There's just no cloistered exclusivity here. The loo doors are directly in open view also -(next to the Saturday night disco decks) which unless I'm mistaken is real no no to Mr Shui - and when I went in there was loo paper all over the floor. Ugh.

But hang on - look at the great fittings - the cool fish tank - the sexy seating areas. Yes, these are all great but completely let down by the bored bar staff and general sense of ennui. (Do they have a feeling they are waiting for a plane too?) They really need to act like it's exclusive if they want to call it that - get some bouncers on the door. And then I read the bar menu and it all started to make sense, at the back it read:

'Nightcaps and Antiques (what?): Mark Twain maybe said it best, "too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough". We doff our Victorian hats to these great 18th Century drinks: Old Fashioned...' You get the idea.

Forgive me but Victorian times were hardly the era of cocktails, more of boys up chimneys and TB; also someone tell me who was drinking Old Fashions in the 1750s? (She wasn't even wearing a tiara till 1819...) I thought the Old Fashioned was a product of the 19th Century when it was invented in Kentucky in America. And surely, if you were going to celebrate cocktails you would be doffing your fedora to the early 20th Century in a speak easy in Manhattan... And what the bloody hell has Mark Twain got to do with this cocktail of brainless marketing spiel - was he up a chimney?!

This is the problem, a really exclusive bar, would know this stuff, it would know never seek to call itself 'elite' - it would be elite. The bar staff would greet you with a smile and bar smarts and they wouldn't be showing squirrels mating in giant sequoia trees on 7 tv monitors. If you are going to talk the talk, do some walking first. If this is Brighton's idea of elite, then god help the elite of Brighton. No sour grapes here, there are great places to drink in Brighton but this is not one of them. This is an idea of what a good bar should be...but unfortunately it's still just that an idea.

Good starting point for a few cocktails before heading out and about.
