I was born in Brighton so well aware it has suffered from punching below its weight in the medium/high end restaurant catgeory (£40+ per head). However thats not to say several are more than happy to charge high end prices for fairly average food. Only a handful can be trusted to deliver what you pay for.. we hoped Blenio's was one of them.
Strangely, despite a number of recomendations from friends and family, we had never been to Blenio's, My wife and I went on a Friday night. We entered into a very warm, charming room, about 80% full; with a unique rustic-chic feel that looks like something out of Elle Decoration. It quitely whispers 'this is not a mainstream restaurant' - the plastic apples on our table gave us a good giggle whilst we read the menu.
Unfortunately the food did not live up to expectations. My steak was really strange. I know it was a ballontine (so rolled and fat cut off) but it came out as almost suis-vide vacuumed.. tasteless. There are few things as disappointing than a bad steak that you know you could do better at home with a cut from Canhams at a quarter the price. My wife was marginally happier with her fish dish, although seeing my disappointment i don't think she wants to further ruin the evening.
£90 for 2 - almost high end London for pretty average (and the worst steak i can remember having in Brighton) food.
Few neighbourhood restaurants get it bang on every time - maybe it was an off night. But a very bad steak and poor 2nd dish is sacrilege.
Shame, like i say, its got a really nice feel to it.
