“A case of form over function”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2008

We stayed in a standard room for a Fri/Sat night. The deciding factor in choosing this hotel was its location - central to everything we needed for our stay - very close to friend's house, shops, restaurants etc.

That was the main good point. Also liked the free wi-fi and ipod dock. The staff were efficient and friendly too.

There were a number of problems with the room - most of which have already been mentioned in previous reviews and most would be really easy to rectify:

Bathroom privacy - we all like a bit of a 'buffer zone' in the loo no matter how familiar you are with your other half! Losing the internal opening from the bathroom to the bedroom and putting a door to the bathoom is all that's required. The frosted glass door to the loo doesn't leave much to the imagination of someone coming in through the main door to the room. There is nothing gained from the open-plan design at all.

The perspex toothmug thing in the space above the sink isn't fixed and easily falls out.

Bedside 'wings' - too low, can't have a glass of water on it for fear of knocking it over in the night. The wings also extend too far down the bed which makes for awkward getting in and out of bed.

No drawers for clothes even though there would easily be enough space to put some in.

The only place to hang clothes was on hangers on hooks on the full-length mirror - so you could only get a few things on there and when clothes were on there you couldn't see yourself in the mirror.

Dressing table area not big enough and no mirror so drying hair hopeless as no powerpoint near the big mirror.

Nice tv but it has an annoying white light glowing from within that you have to go through the tv menus to turn off otherwise it lights the room up at night. It doesn't save the setting either...

Very noisy bar but we were far enough away for it not to be an issue - rooms closer could have a problem with noise though - is that why earplugs are offered to guests?

I would like to know if the designers/owners/management etc have stayed in all the rooms - if they did they would soon find out where the rooms are lacking in terms of practicality and everyday use of a hotel room - maybe the better rooms don't have the same problems, just the cheaper rooms?? Although they are not that cheap...

It's only the location that would make me consider staying here again. Perhaps the points raised time and again by reviewers will be noted and some improvements made - in which case I'd definitely be back.

What a great place to stay! Its location is ideal, right in the centre of Brighton and 5 minutes to the seafront. The reception staff were very friendly and efficient. The room was good- reasonable size, the bed was a tad small but that was ok. The shower was perfect- just heavenly! Nice little touches. The hotel bar is currently THE place to be in Brighton! Very funky and modern place! Will definitely go back!

We happened upon this hotel via a 'Secret Hotel' offer and were overjoyed. From the moment you walk in you feel relaxed and calm. The room was full of little touches that made it special and interesting and the bed was amazingly comfortable - I was inno rush to get up!

We ate in the cafe in the evening as we were heading into town and was overjoyed with the fresh pasta. We then had cocktails in the amazing bar - which weren't cheap but were definitely delicious!

In the morning we had breakfast in the restaurant and kicked ourselves at not having another night to eat dinner there - the menu looked delicious! We paid extra to have a full english and it was well worth it. All locally sources fresh ingredients.

Beware the car parking is £25 a day - although thats pretty standard in Brighton and we hadn't booked so actually, it was a god send.

All staff were amazingly helpful and polite - a real selling point for us. So much so, that fiance and I are planning a return visit to purchase our wedding rings from the lanes, We can't wait.

One very teeny tiny moan - the shower lacked a bit of ooomph! But was still lovely..........

  • Liked — Everything!
  • Disliked — If I HAD to pick one thing it would be the shower.
