I've had the pleasure of visiting Chestnuts a fair few times now and I've never found a single thing to complain about. The homemade soups are heavenly, so simple, tasty and reasonably priced. Then for afters you can choose from a wide selection of cakes or simply indulge in a homemade scone (plain or fruit) with jam and clotted cream. As for drinks, there are many different teas to choose from and the freshly found coffee is superb.
Something you don't see very often in cafes/tea rooms is a wide range of gluten free foods and even if there are options, they're usually very bland and unimaginative. It was immediately obvious to me that the hosts Mary and Malcolm have put a lot of thought into their menus and as a result create gluten free options that won't bore you to tears; any tears that you do shed will be due to sheer happiness. They offer gluten free bread, scones and cakes, making a full afternoon tea possible for those sensitive to gluten. I was incredibly greedy and tried the gluten free scones and cakes, as well as the ones with gluten and it was quite clear that neither side is missing out.
As for hosts Mary and Malcolm, they are always attentive, very friendly and obviously put a lot of time and effort into the tearoom.
To top it all off there's the beautiful china teacups and teapots, quaint floral cake plates, bookcases overflowing with literature, local art on the walls and most importantly of all, you're always surrounded by cakes! What more could you want?!
