“Great for families”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Very relaxed site, hardly any rules but everyone just seemed to prove that we all know how to behave sensibly anyway! Easy to pitch 5 tents and a gazebo together. Love having a camp fire, love the glow stick scavenge, the kids love the woods. As mentioned before, the shop isn't amazingly well stocked for food (although they did have halloumi!) but has a fantastic selection of beers and ciders and a random selection of pocket money toys for the kids (warning: you may well come home with a unicorn on a lead...don't ask!). There are a couple of fridges and freezers for anyone to use, a baby changing area with free wipes and nappy sacks, a lovely little washroom with body lotions and nice soap. Showers could do with updating and need some ventilation but everything else makes up for this. Already booked again for next year :)

We held a small family reunion weekend in June 2014, with daughter and family in a camper van, son and family in a tent, and Mum & Dad in the B&B, which is in the main hub of the site. It was a really relaxing weekend - the weather was good, the children could play in the park, running hither and thither without any fears, and - best of all - we could light a campfire just outside our son's tent. The B&B was fairly basic, being in the original farmhouse, but all the facilities were available although somewhat 'tired'. Breakfast was served in the main hub of the premises and was excellently cooked. As far as the campers were concerned, I understand that the showers and washing facilities were good, and the shop and cafe area were well organised. The staff at the site were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. More importantly, there seemed to be no 'rules' to which one had to strictly adhere, so, providing one behaved sensibly and was aware of the 'neighbours', one could play games (we set up a badminton court!), cook on a BBQ, and have the aforesaid camp fire. The river Deben flows to the north of the site so, if one has a mind, one can pitch one's tent on the banks and fish for breakfast!! This is not a five star holiday experience, but, for anyone who has ever been a boy scout or girl guide, it takes one back to those halcyon days of adventure. If proof was needed, we even sang 'Ging gang gooly' and, I suspect, many of our neighbours joined in!! In short, if you are looking for luxury, this is not for you, but if you want to experience pure pleasure as it used to be, in my opinion, there is no better place. I can thoroughly recommend this campsite as one of the best at which I have stayed - the facilities, in terms of modern sit-in-front-of-a-computer are, probably somewhat sparse - but as an outdoor holiday for both children and adults it cannot be beaten.

We have been going to the orchard campsite for the last 4 years and have always had a lovely time, however, after this may bank holidays cock up we will never be going back!!!!

We knew the site flooded and were not surprised when the owner rang us to tell us our normal pitch may not be available as it was under water, we were told there was another field that we could use (we are a large party of 8 families)but if we wanted but the toilets would be further to walk to. As we were arriving a couple of days before our friends we said we would have a look at the field and see if it was ok. We were told other options would be that our original pitch may be dry or we could camp on the higher ground of the main campsite but it may be a bit cramped.

When we arrived,i was told we would be taken to see the field, i was also told by Alan(the owner) that my husband had accepted the field offer when they spoke on the phone and that there was no other room for us on the campsite if we didn't stay there. I was in the car when my husband had this conversation and he definately did NOT agree to accepting the field without seeing it first. We were driven to the field and it was totally unacceptable as we would have had to drive to the toilets and showers!!!!!

Alan should have cancelled our booking when he realised he did not have room to honor all his bookings. He was grumpy and very rude to us, the other guy working there was very helpful and pleasant.

Alan did find us another campsite to stay on, although not in suffolk (which is where we wanted to be)

Just as we were leaving Alan asked me to take a large amount of meat that another family in our party had ordered for sat night, as it was only thursday and we only had a small coolbox i declined to take it, at which point Alan stormed off in a huff and said the cost would come out of our deposit!!!!!! when I objected to this I got a mouthful of bad language.

It would seen Alan is more concerned with making his money than apologising for letting his regular customers down at the last minute.

We will not be going back

Dear Sarah,

I've looked into this experience for you, it seems that as regular customers everything was done in order for you to not have to cancel your trip, despite the flooding on site. Including offering you a stay at another site close to where we knew other members of your party were based (not in Suffolk), and other local options which other campers have been happy to take in the past.

You were of course at no obligation to take the alternative sites, merely offers so you didn't have to cancel your trip, as you say for a large party which may have been hard to accommodate elsewhere at short notice on the bank holiday weekend.

Sadly none of these options were acceptable to you, so we handed you the small fresh meat order for you to give to your friend who had ordered it.

We hope that you were able to find somewhere else to stay that met your needs.

Kind regards

Emma

We stayed at this campsite with several other families over the May bank holiday weekend. The staff were friendly and helpful and the site is very pretty with a lovely mix of green space, tall trees and a river running along the lower edge. However, it was very busy with many tents pitched close together and lots of cars on site. There was just one fresh water point (no other water taps round the site). The toilet and shower block was hopelessly inadequate with just 5 toilets for the entire site and about the same number of showers. They were unisex facilities too which meant emerging from a toilet every time to face the interested stares of the general public. On the subject of waiting, I have never faced such queues at a campsite in 20 years of camping in the UK and abroad. It was quite usual to see a queue of 6 or 7 people. Ditto for the three small washing up sinks which were fitted with taps that barely reached over the side so that getting a bowl in or out of the sink (which was too small anyway) usually resulted in a big slop of water over the side. Water in the shower was an non-adjustable blisteringly hot but free, water in the sinks was at best very warm. The areas were cleaned but it was not sufficient to keep on top of the high usage and.backs of toilets, upper walls and vents were all dirty. There were also lots of twee plates/jugs and vases around which just added to the dirt and general clutter (pot pourri that looked like it had had a lot of muddy hands rummaging in there). The shop was small and stuffed full of alcohol as promised on the website but fresh provisions were limited e.g sliced white bread and potatoes at 40p each. The welcome was odd e.g. on arrival my friend was told she should should have bought her food in the shop and not brought her own with her. The outdoor large television screen, the smoking tables, the lack of recycling and the very loud party until 2 am one night seemed at odds with the impression of the site given on the website (green, relaxed, natural, family orientated outdoor life). As did everything else. Good things on the site were the availability of logs to buy per wheelbarrow load, the facility to order (hugely expensive) fresh meat prior to arrival and the glow sticks thrown out for the younger children one evening. However, I wouldn't camp their again though for fear of getting a GI infection from the lack of fresh water supply (discouraging sufficient fluid intake), the inadequate toilet facilities (discouraging proper and regular use of the toilets and effective hand-washing) and inadequate washing up facilities (discouraging proper cleansing of stale food from plates etc).

Fifteen of us went for a 15 year olds birthday party. We found the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. The toilets and showers were always clean and there was plenty of really hot water to shower and wash dishes with.
The shop was very interesting and doubles up as a social area. There is attractive wooden seating outside the shop and a pay bar area where you can drink.
My mother and I and my dog stayed in the gypsy caravan for three days which we found comfortable and had some appreciated extras, such as electricity, which was great,as it meant we had lighting,a power point to plug their kettle and our mobiles into.
We would not hesitate to visit again and would recommend it to people of all ages.
Two ladies, one from London and one from France.

Room Tip: The gypsy caravan is a delightful experience.

We stayed here for the week before Easter. The site was not busy unless you wanted hook up.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Even phoning the local sewage plant when the odour blew over.

There's are only a few loos so queue do develop, so practice those pelvic floor muscles!
The showers were clean but dated and could do with a little bit of mould treatment.
The shop was better stocked as the holiday weekend approached.

There are no assigned pitches you can make up your mind. My advice would be to head to the lower field unless you need electric.

Campfire are encouraged although the wood has to be bought on site, as there are no rules some late night singing is to be expected, the children's songs were more appropriate to a family campsite than the all male party... but it is always nice to increase your vocabulary. ..

spent a weekend at the orchards, staff really great, loads of space and knee deep in aliens! the alian weekend is the best fun you can have at the end of september at a camp site anywhere.
One drawback, lack of toilet and showers, queueing in the morning, not good. This said it will not stop me from returning.
