“Anniversary weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

The Castleton was recommended by the Swanage Tourist Information and after a quick phone call walked a short distance to the hotel.First impressions were very favourable,a large three story house extended on both sides with well attended gardens and parking for four cars to the front and side.
Julian greeted us and showed us our room a "superior double with ensuite" complete with Sky TV, a sitting area and a sea view. A beautifully furnished and decorated lounge was also available for guests on the ground floor and we were told "please use it as your own".The breakfast/dining room was adjacent to the lounge and had been extended with a conservatory which gave a light and airy feeling to the room.
Julian was very charming and recommended the pub opposite called "The Crows Nest" for an evening meal as well as watching the Wales/England game.A very pleasant local pub complete with log fire and real ale lived up to our expectations.
After a very comfortable night both Celia and I enjoyed a fantastic Dorset breakfast in the conservatory which really set us up for the remainder of the day.
I have no hesitation in recommending The Castleton, an excellent hotel with excellent hosts and somewhere we would stay again.

Room Tip: Room 2 on the 1st floor complete with ensuite and sea views.

I stayed at the hotel over a long weekend
Parking was ok
The owners are very nice and friendly and welcoming and give their knowledge of the area and are very helpful
The breakfasts were lovely
The room in which we stayed was spotless and was nicely decorated with an eye for detail
There is a guest lounge which is equipped with a TV/dvd player and loads of DVDs available and books
It has a nice bay seating area
The hotel is located about 2 minutes walk away from the beach
Would stay again if taking a spring or Autumn break
A good experience overall

Room Tip: I went for the King size room which they have 2

We first visted the Castleton in 2008 when Julian and Maggie first took over. Since then we've visited each year and have been impressed with how the standards have improved, from good to excellent. In that time Julian and Maggie have won several awards and quite rightly too. We've had rooms 1 and 2 and each are decorated to very high standards. There is a very nice lounge to relax in and meet other guests or your own group. Breakfast has something for everyone and the cooked items are prepared and served to a far better standard than one gets in so called high class hotels. Nothing is too much trouble at the Castleton and there's always a warm welcome.

The car park is quite tight but there is plenty of space available in nearby streets which are quiet so it's not a problem. If you want to use the bus, it stops outside and the ride to Bournemouth is very pleasant.

The Castleton is only a couple of minutes walk to the seafront which offers views across Swanage Harbour and Bay right the way across to the Isle of Wight. The town itself has the basic requirements and is quite quiet out of season which makes it very relaxing. The steam railway is always worth a visit or if you like something historic then wander around town looking at the Mowlem artifacts.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, check the excellent Castleton web site which has a video of a selection of the r...

Julian and Maggie were attentive hosts without being overly so... and answered all queries readily. The room (3) was very comfortable with a soft bed . There is no sea view but you are only two minutes walk from the sandy beach. Visiting in Feb gave us the feeling of being priviledged to have the seafront almost to ourselves apart from the odd person dog waling or fishing, certainly on the Monday until a few more visitors had arrived with kids for half term break.
The town was still very quiet even in a school break. Breakfast was very good and it was no trouble for J & M to alter the content of the cooked breakfast to please.
The Hotel was spotless as far as I could see and the tea tray in our room was replenished very quickly....we even got two changes of bottled water when we had been out for a long walk and used it up. Parking was ok for us , but more than four cars wont go unless they're smart cars or KA's etc..
However until 01-05-13 street parking is almost unrestricted in large parts of town.
We did the 4 mile walk to Corfe Castle from the hotel which is fairly hard work as the initial 2miles are steep , but it is worth the effort and the steam train can be boarded at the castle for £6.50 each to return ( well worth doing ).
The town has a certain 'classy but friendly' feel and in my book knocks spots off Sandbanks Millionaire housing estate ( across the bay ).
The hotel has a pretty good DVD collection in case you need to stay in etc...
We are 45/50 years old and see ourselves as even minded and tolerant, whilst expecting value for money....we felt we got that at the Castleton. give it a try.

We first visited The Castleton a few years ago, just after Julian and Maggie had taken it over. They had already made a determined start on improving the place then. At the end of October, this year, we returned with some relatives and we were all most impressed with what they had achieved. The whole place is beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The welcome was as warm and professional as we remembered and the breakfast was up there with the very best. Sometimes, returning somewhere can be a bit of a let-down - especially when you bring others with you. No chance of a let-down here! We shall return...!

Room Tip: Close your eyes and take pot luck. They're all great!

I chose this BnB/hotel because all the other trip advisers had given it good reviews and was not disappointed. Near to the beach and a stroll away from town The Castletown is a very clean, warm and well decorated place and our room was nicer than some more expensive hotels I've stayed in. However what really marked The Castleton out was the friendly, relaxed, and attentive service that we received and that made us feel not only as liked and valued customers but as friends. A place we would hope to stay at again.

Had a lovely 1 night stay here as part of a walking weekend. Excellent rooms, furnished to a high standard. Breakfast was also excellent. Little bit of a walk to the town centre but very close to beach. Recommended.
