“Helpful, friendly place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2014

I stayed here for a week during the summer. Awaiting a hip operation and very lame, I was horrified to see that the shower was over the bath and there were no non-slip mats or grab rails. When I asked to move room they said they were all the same. HOWEVER - the next day a mat and a grab rail were installed and they even asked me where I would like the rail putting. Also, I was thanked for pointing this out and they would take steps to put safety aids in other rooms too. Excellent service, they couldn't have been more helpful. True, the room did need a refurb, but the bed was comfortable, the room was a good size and clean.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which isn't over the bar if you might be bothered by noise at the weekends.

I recently stayed for two nights at this hotel to attend a friend's wedding at Sherborne Abbey. I am seven and a half months pregnant and read on the reviews that the rooms at the back got very hot. I therefore telephoned the hotel before my arrival and asked to be moved. They moved me to a side room and provided me with a fan, which was already on when I got into the room to cool it down. The first morning I asked at breakfast if they had decaffeinated tea, which they unfortunately didn't. However, the next morning they went out and bought me the tea so I could have that with my breakfast, which was really kind. During my stay they continually asked after my well being, if only all hotels were this kind to pregnant women!

We (as a family of 4) stayed recently for a wedding. The hotel is very well located in the town centre of Sherborne with convenient parking at the rear. The staff are very helpful (especially Anna) and food price and quality very good. I would agree with some of the other reviews on here that the rooms are a little tired but it appeared that steps were underway to remedy this. Overall it was an excellent stay and would visit again.

Single room for £50 a night with breakfast was very good value. Nice room with clean well kept bathroom. Bed was elderly, but just about all right. Noisy in the evenings from the bar, especially Friday and Saturday when it is open until midnight. The Abbey clock strikes every quartet of an hour, and is plainly audible with the windows open at the back. Breakfast was freshly cooked and hot and highly recommended. Try the scrambled egg.

We stayed weekend of 12 th July for a wedding in The Abbey ( across the road). Staff were very helpful and friendly. Good car parking, breakfast mains good but could do with more cereal choice and fruit dishes. Didn't eat any other meals. The whole place needs a refurbishment and as Sherborne is such a beautiful place it would do well to be more upmarket in the standard of finishes to the bedrooms and public areas.

Room Tip: The back rooms get the sun so baking hot in summer, front street not too busy so could be better but...

We had a few days here whilst touring Dorset. From the friendly welcome to the last meal it was all great.
The hotel has a large car park and is centrally located so exploring the town on foot was easy.
The bar was friendly and served honest pub grub to a high standard.
A good breakfast set you up for the day and a relaxing pint at the end made it a great trip.
