“Not so good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

Our room was o.k., small, but clean as was the bathroom, it was the rest of the pub that was the problem, the food we had was not very good, everything seemed a bit grubby and when one of the kitchen staff came into the bar carrying a tea towel, which was to say the least a very unfashionable shade of grubby, that really made me wish we had stayed somewhere else. Breakfast the following morning was just about passable, but the memory of the tea towel put me off and the coffee was undrinkable.

Check in was easy, and our room was pleasant and clean . Fairly big bathroom with amazing water pressure. Prefer king size bed but slept reasonably well.
Breakfast was pretty good, although staff are over-stretched which meant we were waiting a long time for some items. Also on our 2nd morning there was a very loud smelly hoover going in the bar near the breakfast area which I felt could have been done after breakfast was over. Staff are polite and helpful and a couple of minor service issues were quickly and personally dealt with. You would be pushed to find better value for money in Sherborne and it has a car park, which is handy given it's central location. We did eat there in the evening and the food was reasonable for the price.

This Inn is perfectly located just across from the beautiful abbey. Our room was a little on the small side, but had nice views to the front. Everything worked as it should and it was clean.

Free parking is available directly behind the inn.

The pub is owned by the Marston Inns chain and so you can get good value food specials, though obviously not Mitchelin Star standards! After touring all of the local pubs, this one had the best atmosphere of them all.

Breakfast was good quality and staff were friendly and pleasant.

When we were driving to the Inn, we heard it before we saw it. As we rounded the corner there was what must have been every single teenager for miles around outside. There were bouncers on the door & they were obviously keeping a tight control on underage drinking as all the kids seemed to have come prepared & were comparing IDs. It was VERY noisy. My heart sank but we checked in & were on the second floor - no lift but not a problem for us. The carpets were a bit swirly & old fashioned & there was a slight whiff so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the room was lovely, contemporary with a lovely big bathroom & a view of the Abbey. Bottled water given and also earplugs which were very much needed. I didn't hear the Abbey clock at all because the teenyboppers outside were drowning out the noise. Noise went on until after 2.00 am although the receptionist next morning said it was from the pub opposite. In the end, noise is noise no matter where is comes from. We didn't eat in Inn as it looked a bit mass produced so ate in Three Wishes around the corner which is highly recommended. Breakfast was nice enough, not a lot of choice but the cooked breakfast had decent sausages which is always a good sign. If the child gathering isn't a regular occurance then I would recommend the Inn.

I am there now awake at 5.30. Now realise why earplugs were supplied! The noise from the bells striking the hour at 5 is very loud! Then it strikes the quarter past and half past too!
We staid herel to get a lie in with little one else where, but we get woken up later by them!

This was the nicest place I stayed on my August-birthday-solo jaunt around England. I was booked in by serendipity because the b and b I'd booked had a water problem. The single room was spacious and had all the amenities of a 4 star hotel: Toiletries, comfortable bed, and a flat screen, satellite TV. The bathroom was huge. The check-in stafff and especially the maids were so friendly. Breakfasts were at the top of the list for choice and preparation compared to all the the places I've stayed over 22 years of traveling to the UK. I've never stayed anywhere with a view of an ancient abbey across the street either. The room was quiet. The restaurant downstairs, besides offering breakfast, was great for a pint or a sit-down evening meal. I will stay here again when my husband and I return..
