“Things are looking up!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We decided to try lunch at Hotel Grosvenor after a lapse of a year or so and we were so glad we did. We had a disastrous experience under the old management. Ok the food was good then but they had a light on the floor and my brand new coat was near it and it started to smoulder and as a result it was ruined. We told the manager and he basically said it was our fault and offered no compensation.

But we do love Shaftesbury so visited again and thought we would pop in to the Grosvenor for a late lunch and it was excellent. The food was delicious and the staff couldn't have been nicer. We look forward to going again.

One little point. We enquired about lunch on Sunday and apparently they don't do it. Perhaps this matter could be revisited because it would be lovely to go there for lunch followed by a nice walk along Abbey Walk and the Green to "walk it off".

“Would you pay more for a table with kitchen view????”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012 via mobile

My husband and I decided to try dinner at the Grosvenor now that it is under new management. There was a large party filling the main dining room. We were relegated to the room with the big opening into the ugly kitchen. I mentioned to the waiter what a poor design this was. He said people would pay extra to sit there. I admit when they turned the heat lamps on the waitiing food, our table warmed to a comfortable temperature on a chilly night.
The food was as good as the best local gastro pubs and priced similarly. The service was solicitous.

“Elegant Dining - Treat yourself!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

The Grosvenor is easily located in the centre of Shaftesbury and looked lovely from the outside. Inside was even better. It had a really elegant dining room and the tables were nicely distanced apart so that you had privacy from other diners. The staff did not fall into the trap of just sitting everyone next to each other but gave us all some space. Even when it filled up, there was plenty of room for everyone.

To start, the staff gave us bread, butter and oil/vinegar which was pleasant. For starters I chose the liver parfait, with chutney, served with brioche. And my partner had the grilled mackerel on granary toast which was very tasty.

For the main course, I selected the chicken supreme in a Madeira sauce, with honey glazed baby carrots and potato puree. Whilst my partner chose the grilled lemon sole with peas and green snaps and new potatoes. Both were really nice and would definitely order the same meals again, although we would both really like to explore the whole menu further!

The waiting on staff were really attentive (especially the maitre'd) and helped to ensure that we had a lovely dining experience. We would definitely return to further sample their menu.

“Nice food, good service, best restaurant in town”

A bit overpriced, but otherwise nice food and modern environment. Child friendly.

“Excellent Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

Since this has re-opened a few years ago, this has been an excellent choice for a restaurant. The food is slightly lighter than the nearby (but very good) Fleur de Lys and shows a good use of local ingredients. Tonight my steak was cooked to (rare) perfection, whilst my wife's duck breast was (she said) exactly as it should have been. This is a very good choice for a restaurant and it will remain one of our favourites in the locale.
