This old free house is located in the village of Semley about 1/2 mile east of the A350 North of Shaftesbury. Whilst confining its menu to standard pub fare, our party had perfectly cooked whitebait and a plate of the best calamari from both taste and texture point of view that we had experienced in a long time. Our main course choices included crevettes; mushroom & pepper stroganoff and cottage pie, each of which met with approval., However, the steak and kidney pie in particular, was topped with those lovely cut rectangles of shortcrust pastry which tells of tray cooking and is reminiscent of the very best of school dinners from so long ago. No little pie dishes with the disheartening slab of puff pastry dropped on top in an attempt to kid you that you are being presented with a pie for this pub.
Would we go again...Definitely.
