“An unexpected pleasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

We recently holidayed near Lyme Regis and wanted to take advantage of babysitting arrangements to go for a nice lunch for the wife and I. The decor of the place is quite dated, as was the look and feel of menu's etc and I wondered if this was more for a the 'mature' clientele on arrival, but was hugely impressed by the food when it arrived. A humble souffle elevated to a thing of beauty as was my wife's dressed crab, and a delicious pud, all for incredibly reasonable prices. The evening menu also looked cracking and very reasonable so next time we'll pay them another visit. We got lost getting there as well, so plan your journey, its worth it!

“Much improved”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

This was our second visit since the new owners took over. The food was good the last time, but it was perfect this time. There were several things on the menu which I would happily have. The service was also good and it was lovely to be able to sit around the sofa before and after the dinner. The only thing is you have to book way in advance in order to secure a table which is not something we are very good at doing otherwise we would of been there a lot more often!

“Excellent, as always!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We had another lovely meal at Yalbury Cottage. The whole experience is difficult to beat - from the beautiful canapés served in the comfortable lounge before the meal, to the handmade chocolates accompanying coffee/tea afterwards (again in the lounge) - everything is done to perfection. The staff/owners are very friendly and attentive, without being obtrusive. (We appeared to be the only non-resident diners there last night, everyone else being lucky enough to be staying overnight.)

The canapés were cod goujons served with tartare sauce, marinated olives and tiny baked potatoes beautifully decorated with a piped rosette of cream cheese and garnish. For starter I had the smoked haddock and cheese soufflé and my husband had chicken liver parfait with homemade brioche. Both were excellent. We both had beef as the main course (can't remember the exact name!) but it was served on a delightful and tasty mix of vegetables, with dauphinoise potatoes. In between the main course and dessert, we were offered the option (included in the price) of local cheeseboard or Yalbury rarebit. I chose the rarebit whilst my husband had the cheeseboard. Both were very good - a great choice of cheeses was offered. For dessert we had the Rhubarb Charlotte and the Rum & Raisin Rice Pudding Cheesecake and shared them so we could try both! They were served beautifully and not your usual 'run of the mill' puddings - we both agreed our favourite of the two was the Rhubarb Charlotte (delicious!). With the meal we had a bottle of the local Sherborne Castle wine (white) which we had tried on a previous occasion and really enjoyed - just as good as we remembered!

As mentioned, we enjoyed tea and coffee in the lounge with handmade chocolates - a lovely end to a lovely evening!

If you have a special occasion to celebrate, or just want to treat yourself, this is the place to go!

“A real gem - treasure it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

The perfect place to end a tour of the South Coast with a celebratory birthday meal - rooms comfortable with some real homely touches - this is a Restaurant with rooms, not an hotel as some reviewers seem to state. The location is wonderful - rural, peaceful, with the small garden area well tended and extensive farmland views. A perfect base to explore the area (although I could have spent all day watching the birds, rabbits and horses outside my room!) I wish I'd had longer! We thought the food was exquisite - both dinner and breakfast - the welcome warm and I would thoroughly recommend Yalbury Cottage as the perfect place to spoil yourself.

“Good food but rough around the edges”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013 via mobile

Have dined here several times without any complaints as such.
The food is ok, service a little subdued but obviously it is a small family run hotel rather than a complete professional set up.
Good for business lunches if a little quirky.
