My fiancé and I just spent a night at The Liston for a romantic weekend away for my birthday and to visit family. We looked at pictures of the bedrooms on their website and saw good reviews on here so we thought we had found a nice place. There weren't rooms available in different hotels or bed and breakfasts for this weekend (unless we were willing to pay nearly £200) so we thought we'd give this place a go.
Oh my goodness, I wish we hadn't! From the outside it looks like a perfectly pleasant place, the garden is pretty. However, the bedrooms are obviously not all updated and lovely as the pictures suggest.
The room we stayed in had;
* Peeling wall paper,
*a shower with a mouldy edge (the shower cubicle was also open at the top so that felt a bit weird),
*a nail sticking out of the wall just above the headboard (dangerous!),
*no hair dryer,
*loose tea bags (not individual ones in little packets that appear a bit more hygienic).
*The carpet was not hoovered since goodness knows when as there were little white bits all over the floor and a little sweet wrapper partially under the bed.
*The two chairs in the room had lost the padding on the seat so it was quite like sitting on a small toilet seat! The leather was also peeling off the seats in parts.
*One of the light bulbs wasn't working,
*The bathroom had plastic hooks stuck to the back of the door using little sticker things, there were marks on the back of the door where we could see they had been stuck previously and fallen off.
*There were no hand towels.
*The bed was very squeaky and wobbly.
*The duvet cover was ancient and ugly.
As it does appear that the rooms are slowly being updated we do feel that this should be very clearly advertised and the old rooms should be a lot cheaper to stay in. We feel we were ripped off as we were charged £90 for our room. The owners should feel embarrassed for renting these rooms out at this price.
We chose not to have breakfast there in the morning as we were anxious about what that would be like based on the room!! The lady at reception did not ask us how our stay was at the hotel, perhaps that is because she knew what answer she would get?
The good reviews for this hotel must surely be based on the bedrooms that have already been done up.
