How refreshing to see a small family run business thriving amongst the myriad of high rise faceless chains. The staff were all pleasant, helpful and efficient throughout our stay.
We arrived at lunch time. While the bar appeared to be closed and there was no snack menu evident the very helpful receptionist kindly arranged for sandwiches, tea and beer to be served for us in the garden area. The garden is a great sun trap (also with shaded areas) that allowed us to unwind from the journey before going out.
We elected not to eat in the hotel in the evening partly as we were going out and ironically partly due the excellent hotel restaurant reviews and menu available (see trip advisor reviews for Gilbey's restaurant). As a party of small eaters we felt the standard two / three course options would be too much for our needs this time. Unfortunately it didn't occur to me to ask until we were checking out if an alternative snack provision was available during the evenings. I now know had we asked the hotel would have arranged something for us but perhaps a bar menu could be made available for guests ? Having sampled the very tasty breakfast I wish I had asked earlier. Again how nice to see linen table cloths and to taste freshly cooked food.
We stayed in two of the superior refurbished rooms which were spacious, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The sunny balcony was an added unexpected bonus. I personally would have liked more privacy between the balconies. I notice in one of the photos taken for this hotel there is an awning partitioning the balconies but these weren't in place during our stay.
We did have some disturbance during the night courtesy of returning late night revellers slamming their bedroom doors and playing loud music on their return. The noise wasn't sufficiently prolonged to warrant getting a member of staff in to deal with the troublemakers and this comment is directed as much toward fellow inconsiderate travelers as to the hotel. This hotel certainly isn't the type of establishment that would set out to attract the party animals. However as soundproofing between rooms isn't great I would be inclined to ask if any functions / groups are booked during my stay. Of course this is a possible potential hazard in most hotels. Fitting of door slam stops would at least cut down on this irritation.
I am not normally inclined to award '5' ratings but this hotel came as close as any I have stayed in this year. Making a snack / bar menu available, inter balcony privacy and fitting anti door slam devices are suggestions for improvement. But this not to detract from the very pleasant / efficient staff, enjoyable (food breakfast and snacks), cleanliness and comfort of rooms. I would not hesitate to stay here again or to recommend this hotel to friends and family. Compliments to the management and staff for your achievements.
