My partner and I stayed at the Shirley Hotel for one night last bank holiday weekend. (We booked and paid for the room 4 weeks in advance)
After reading the reviews, we imagined a nice and cozy B&B, close to the beach, with friendly owners and staff. The only thing that turned out to be as we expected, was the proximity to the beach!
As we arrived, we accidentally met the owner on the lobby, who looked genuinely bothered by our arrival, as he had to stop doing whatever he was doing and assist us, so he didn't spend any time trying to make us feel welcome, not even a forced smile.
Just handed us the key, pointed to where our room was and told us that we only have from 8am - 9am if we want any breakfast, then turned around and left. We decided to just laugh about it and not let anything spoil our weekend.
We had to struggle a bit trying to figure out the outdated key system, as no member of staff was in sight, but we eventually managed to get inside our room.
The room was small and fairly clean. On the bed there was a guide dated 2009, 2 folded towels, one small pack of hand cream on the left side, and one small pack of shower gel on the right.
Were we supposed to somehow share them?
In the bathroom the mat was hanging over the shower door. Guess nobody knew we were coming, even though we paid for the room 4 weeks in advance?
We once again decided to not let small details spoil our weekend, and didn't think much of it.... until we tried the bed...
First the old, cheap, nylon, scruffy, bed linen that had the same level of coziness as a shower curtain.
The mattress was very lumpy and impossible to sleep on, and was actually not a double mattress, but 2 singles, with absolutely nothing holding them together!
As we both struggled to sleep by to 5am, we decided to not have breakfast and try to get at least a couple of hours of rest as we planned to spend our day visiting sorrounding areas, and we really needed it.
This plan didn't go so well either. Starting 7am, the owner was standing right in front of our door shouting at his staff.
And I don't mean talking loudly, literally SHOUTING. Not even a trace of respect for us or the other guests. It went on for almost two hours on and off, when my partner decided to open the door and asked him to lower his tone as we were trying to sleep. He only answered with a defying look, then turned around and left with no explanation or apology.
In the end we just gave up, we decided to head back home as we were too tired to do anything else, which was quite disappointing as we both work very long hours and we can only rarely have weekends off together.
We could have understood all the things that were not perfect, as we weren't expecting the Ritz for 60£. Even the uncomfortable bed could have been understood, as maybe they didn't realize the mattress and linen need replacing.
What is not understandable, is being so incredibly rude to your guests. My partner also runs a hotel and he found it almost surreal!
As a conclusion, Mr. Jorge should probably work on his attitude and service level if he wants to make more money, rather than trying to save 2£ by offering early morning breakfasts that only last an hour and hoping people don't show up.
