“Great stay in Bournemouth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Our second visit to Bournemouth this year. Unfortunately our first visit wasn't here. Can't understand why this hotel isn't number 1 on trip advisor as it far exceeds the number 1 in terms of rooms, food and quality of service. We stopped in a sea view room which was bright and airy, if a little warm on a hot summers night but fans are supplied in the room. Evening meals are superb, with the menu changed nightly. Breakfast was very good also. The staff were all very pleasant and offered great service. Will definitely stop here on our next visit to Bournemouth.

Room Tip: A sea view room on a high floor are best for excellent views.

We spent a long weekend over here and spent over £532 for four nights. As I was recovering from surgery I didn’t want to have to go very far to reach the beach and amenities so we choose the Hermitage. The first room we were put in was smaller than our bedroom at home! It was also extremely hot in there so we took the fan out of the cupboard to cool down the room. Unfortunately it started rattling away and made such a huge din, we called reception who then sent someone to sort it out. Four fans later, we found one which worked but still noisy. We were not happy with the room size (I mean a £10 travelodge room would have been bigger and more appealing!) and the fan. We went down to reception after breakfast and they moved us to a bigger room with more or less the same fan problem. Cannot fault the cleaning staff who were meticulous and very sincere. I had dropped my credit card on the bed before going down for breakfast and they found it and placed it on top of the bed. Double beds for a couple is really dated and uncomfortable. Not enough plug points so you have to choose between charging camera, mobile or phone.
Only one rickety old lift which is a very tight fit for 3-4 people bags. Very slow!
Breakfast was bland, boring and poorly managed. I don’t eat beef or pork so I would have really appreciated a vegetarian sausage or more cold options – selection of cheeses, vegetable crudités, variation in mushrooms (the flat big ones were slightly bitter), hash browns or a better selection of fruits.
You had to ask the waitress for toast and coffee and by the time the toast arrived, it was lukewarm to cold. Waitresses were very harassed especially on Saturday morning hence some grumpiness. Food ran out very quickly so we had to stand around waiting for food. Fruits – would have appreciated the watermelon in a bigger bowl or refreshed frequently as it finishes quickly. I asked one of the waitresses to replenish the fruit and she basically said “if its not in there then its finished” and walked away. I couldn’t imagine staying more than the three nights as I was really fed up of the breakfast and the service. Hotel lobby lounge was practically dead. They would really do better business at the bar if they had some sort of entertainment as apart from 1-2 places on the beach, there isn’t that much on. Also an outside area to be able to sit out would be great. I am not sure if I would spent that much money in a 4* star slightly tired hotel with not a huge amount of facilities. Don’t get me wrong though it was a good stay at the end and nice but not luxurious at all.

Room Tip: Avoid room 316 at all cost!

Second break to this hotel this year. Excellent location, very clean spacious room (we had a sea view room this time) ample free on site parking and extensive snack menu to choose from in the lounge area. 24 hour sandwich selection came in very handy one night when we were starving & had missed an evening meal. Only slight critisism was breakfast time they kept running out of food & you had to wait for more to be cooked and brought out and not enough choice of non cooked foods for my liking.

My wife and I have just returned from our holiday in Bournemouth and the fifth year we have stayed at this hotel.
We had a sea view room which was spacious, well equipped and very clean.
We had dinner in the restaurant every evening with a very good menu to choose from and excellent quality.
The restaurant was very spacious, clean and well maintained, the staff always looked very smart and tidy in their uniforms.
There was also a very good choice of food available at breakfast.
We have nothing but praise for the high standards this hotel maintains and together with the very good weather our holiday has been very enjoyable again.
The hotel is excellently located for access to the gardens, pier and beach, BIC, town and bus station.
We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we will be returning next year.

Very much better than our two previous hotels and even though very busy we did at least feel that we were people rather than just another computerised booking. Just over the road for the beach and pier (handy underpass avoided having to cross the busy road) and more or less in the lovely Bournemouth Gardens. A nice touch was the giveaway bath ducks! Great improvement since last being in Bournemouth was that a really ugly building next to the pier has been demolished and the view is no longer spoilt. Only criticism was that breakfast seemed rather chaotic.

Room Tip: Get a sea view

We have stayed here almost every year for 10 years and as always we were very happy with our stay this August. We had great food included in our half board price and my three boys enjoyed it so much being so close to the park, beach, and town. The permanent and seasonal staff have always been accommodating and we will no doubt land at the Hermitage next year also. The Hermitage makes our stay in this lovely seaside location.

Room Tip: Book early! Suites are great for families!
