Having just moved back to the Westbourne area, and this time being on the Westcliff side, we are trying out a lot of the restaurants in this part of Bournemouth, to discover new favourites within staggering distance of our new home.
This place was recommended to both my husband and I and it is so close by, we were excited to give it a try.
The staff are lovely, and there is a great atmosphere - it has a very 'old school' Italian feel.
I had an avocado and prawn starter which was quite average, the prawns didn't have much flavour, and a lot of the avocado was brown/black - I know it can be hard to get an avocado when it is at perfect ripeness, but when it's gone over and got dark bits, the flavour is really not great. My husband had the pate and found it average.
For mains I went for the Ravioli and it was unfortunately disappointing. The filing was not at all creamy, it was quite dry, and gave the impression it had been cooked from frozen. My husband had a pizza which was not like the usual kind you would expect from an Italian. It had a cheap tasting bready base, and reminded my husband of the Chicago pizzas he used to eat at Uni.
We decided a desert may cheer up our experience, and we were glad to find it did - both deserts were excellent and very tasty, we could not fault them.
We left feeling a bit disappointed to not have found the food as good as we had hoped, but we both agreed that food that other tables had ordered did look incredibly nice and other guests seemed happy with their food. We both felt that maybe if we've pushed the boat out a bit and ordered a meat main dish, we might have found our experience quite different, but then we feel that an Italian restaurant should be able to provide excellent pasta and pizza dishes surely?
The restaurant is doing well, and I love that the staff are clearly passionate about the work they do, and maybe if we had ordered different dishes, our experience there would have been different, but we have since found another Italian very close to this which we both really enjoyed, so we doubt we will be going back to try any of the other dishes. We both felt like it was the kind of place a slightly more mature diner, who is on a weekend holiday to Bournemouth, would rave about possibly having nothing similar near to their home, but we have enjoyed other local Italians in Bournemouth where we felt the food was of a higher quality than this place.
If you go here, maybe avoid the pasta and pizza dishes. The meat and seafood dishes looked excellent.
