“Good but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

The Cumberland is a very nice hotel but sadly my husband and I were put in an unfurnished room which spoilt our stay, also there was no remote for the TV. After trying several remotes was told that nothing could be done about it. The room was not very clean was shocked when the porter was looking for the remote and pulled out the bed there was a thick layer of dust on the carpet.i know the rooms are still being refurbished but the cleaning should still be to a certain standard.

I must say that all the communal places were wonderful with a great Art Deco feel and the food was enjoyable. I would stay again but in a refurbished room.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

The Cumberland Hotel is in a beautiful location. The pool and terrace are fab and we were blessed with glorious weather.

The staff were excellent and restaurant and communal areas really well done.

I was less impressed with food, which was pretty average and some of the rooms. They are obviously renovating the rooms from top down. We were part of a large group and those who had newly decorated rooms were lovely but our 2 rooms were very tired and 1 was tiny!

Some had great terraces too.

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room.

My niece and I had two nights in The Cumberland Hotel with evening meals and a massage. The situation was perfect overlooking the sea and there was even a nearby lift down to the beach. The staff were so helpful and friendly, our room was spacious and the food was excellent with a good choice. We used the outdoor swimming pool a lot and the massage in the next door hotel was one of the best I have ever had.The big advantage of staying here is that one can use the facilities in three hotels next door to each other.

Room Tip: We were very happy with a non sea view cheaper room although the view wasn't great. We were out...

Went on a girls couple of days away trip. Hotel was brilliant, the staff couldn't do enough to ensure we had a good time, food was superb. We come from a customer service background and the service was faultless. It was delightful to actually stay somewhere where they are not ashamed to have plenty of staff to assist you. They say they are a 3* hotel trying to give 5* service and they certainly achieve that. Can't wait to visit again

Room Tip: Ask for a front sea facing room

Just returned 16/7 (two couples) from 2 nights at this hotel. Booked the hotel after reading online reviews and it looked and sounded good. The hotel's location is great being located right on the sea front. There was no parking available in the Cumberland but we managed to park in one of the nearby sister hotels without issue, the walk to the Cumberland took no more than a couple of minutes.

First impressions were good The Art Deco styling is attractive from the front of the hotel. Check-in was quick and efficient. The lobby is neat and tidy and the breakfast/dinner and bar areas which are located directly off the lobby are clean and bright. Staff were friendly and polite. There is a small pool by the front of hotel which we didn't use. Unfortunately this is where the good news ends, unbelievably there is one small lift serving the hotel, it caters for just 3 people, we were on the fourth floor and used the stairs most of the time, as waiting times for the lift could be long, also a little inconvenient if you have heavy suitcases. Hallway carpet on our floor (fourth) was filthy and badly needed cleaning, unfortunately things got worse when we entered the bedroom!! the room was badly dated and needed a complete overhaul, the bed was tiny and not particularly comfortable, the wall paper had been painted over-badly, the windows and mirrors needed cleaning and be careful when using the shower as the water temperature get very hot even when set to cold!! There is no air conditioning in the room, really this is Bournemouth in Mid July!!!

The hotel is located about 1.5 miles from the town centre if you want to get out and about for shopping etc, Castlepoint shopping Centre which Ibelieve is the main shopping centre in the are is about 4.5 miles away, it has a good selection of shops.

Back to the hotel, I would not recommend this hotel in its current condition.

Recently went on a girlie weekend staying at The Cumberland. Super decor throughout the public areas but the bedrooms could have done with a total overhaul.

Downside: The hotel lacked air con which made it difficult to sleep on a muggy night...dread to think what it would be like on hotter days! That plus the rather shabby balcony and bathroom and particularly slow service in the restaurant area made me drop a point.

However, that aside, the staff were friendly and welcoming, great location, free off-road parking and views of the beach made this a pleasurable stay.

Would definitely return especially if they don't miss any of their huge Alice-In-Wonderland type chrome-effect lamps, mirrors and chess pieces in the bar lounge when I leave - simply divine! Lol

Dear Pepper1905,

Thank you for your review. Great to hear you had a good 'girlie' weekend. Unfortunately we don't have air-con, but there aren't many 3*s that provide in bedrooms. But overall your comments are great, and your recommendations is greatly appreciated.

We look forward welcoming you back soon. For the latest offers please visit our website or call us on 01202-298350 for the latest offers.
