“Weekend at Heathlands Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Just returned from a weekend at Heathland, in a group of 50 people. This group has used the hotel for the past few years, but this year the standards appear to have dropped. Although the staff tried to help, many people complained of the lack of heating. The staff tried to supply heaters, but this occasionally caused the fuses to blow. Personally, we had a flickering light in the bathroom, which was reported to reception on Friday evening, but when we left on Sunday afternoon, it still hadn't been fixed. I understand the star rating system, but The Heathlands is looking a bit tired, and in my opinion needs to be refreshed, and have sufficient staff on hand, to meet its customers needs.

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 day break at the Heathlands Hotel and having read one of the more recent reviews, feel compelled to put pen to paper to add a little sanity and balance. We had a couple of days to take a break and wanted something reasonably close to the sea and easy on the pocket. The Heathlands scores well on both counts.

This hotel keeps it's prices very low to presumably keep bums on seats all year round. It's a quick turnaround, no frills establishment, and anyone with a grain of common sense would know that they aren't going to walk into the Ritz. We paid £110 for 2 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal - incredible value for money by anyone's standards, but equally, with that kind of price there are inevitably limitations on what you can reasonably expect.

The cheapest we could eat out for a sit down breakfast and evening meal would have been in a local chain restaurant. They would charge (per day) approx £40 for a reasonable 2 course meal and drinks, and another £20 for breakfast. So that's £120 on comparable food alone. If you apply that to the Heathlands, that means our accommodation was effectively free of charge for the duration of our stay.

The problem with a lot of the reviews on websites such as this is simply that people want silver service but are only prepared to pay greasy spoon money for it. The simple answer to that is pay more and you will get more - better room, better food, better service. Big ideas and small budgets never sit very well together, and always lead to disappointment. and unbalanced reviews on sites like this.

So before you go believing all that you read, think carefully about what you are paying for and what you are getting. If someone offered you a cheap car, you would ask questions about what is wrong with it. So why moan when you book a cheap hotel and it doesn't roll out the red carpet when you arrive?

I have to make one point about smoking. Someone has added that they smoked in their room. The Heathlands only has 2 smoking rooms so the chances of that person having one is remote. How do I know this? We enquired about smoking rooms before we booked, as we didn't a room stinking of the disgusting smell of 2nd hand smoke stench left behind by another guest. So I find it rather irresponsible for anyone to smoke in their room if it not specifically designated for that purpose - after all there are hundreds of other people in the hotel too consider.

So, having added a little balance, here are a few facts that more accurately reflect the hotel (in my opinion).

The food - for the money there was plenty of choice of hot and cold and while the staff had a little trouble keeping up replenishing the hot plates, there was always loads to eat. Breakfast, likewise, had hot and cold choices. I cannot believe that someone has moaned because they had to queue for food. We have stopped in very nice 5 star hotels abroad that provided buffet style food which meant queuing. What's the big deal? Surely the important thing is the food itself? If you want to be waited on hand and foot, again, put your hand in your pocket and stay somewhere that provides that level of service. The Heathlands simply doesn't have the staff to provide table service, and for the money we paid, we wouldn't expect it.

The Hotel - for a high turnover, high footfall establishment, inevitably some of the common areas are going to look a little tired, but overall, we found the hotel to be clean and well presented.

The Staff - Over worked but helpful.

The Room - our room was clean and well presented. The shower room was a little small, but it did the job. We don't go on a break to watch TV, but if a comment needed to be made it was that the TV was on a table which was below the height of the bed. So to watch the TV you had to sit upright on the bed. Why not put the TV on the wall? Not an issue for us, but worth mentioning if you like your TV.

The Entertainment - one of the other contributors was not happy with the entertainment. In a hotel of this type you are not going to get well known names. The entertainment was the usual mix of unknowns doing exactly what you expect. Not our thing so we avoided. If you want Saturday Night at the Palladium, spend the money and you will get what you expect. Otherwise, stop moaning.

Proximity to the sea /town centre - My wife and I walked to the cliff top from the hotel in less than 2 minutes, and from there we had a lovely walk into Bournemouth which took us another 15 minutes. The going is a little tough as half of it is uphill, but that's fine if you are in reasonable health and take your time. It would definitely be too much for anyone who has mobility issues - but there are always cabs to take you about and they are not expensive for short hops into town and back.

In summary, Bournemouth is a fantastic place to stay and recharge your batteries, and the Heathlands is a great hotel to use as a base. It's cheap, but you get a lot for your money - BUT - if you are one of those perpetual moaners who expects something for nothing then you will be disappointed. My advice is save your money and book a hotel that will match your expectations. Either that, or do better research before you book a hotel to make sure that you will get what you expect.

However much you pay for a room you should have the ability to heat it at any time not be offered more blankets. Did get moved into a single room (107b - b stands for box) next to a slamming door. Caters for the large group with little money and low standards. Buyers beware, there's a hundred hotels in bournemouth, probably a few even worse. Staff were pleasant enough.

Have just returned from this hotel with a coach party of elderly people, who were mostly disabled,This hotel was booked a year ago, when we all arrived they had no walk in shower rooms for 4 couples, this was sorted after a few wasted hours,The night got worse, the bar man was so slow there were approx 20 people queing 4 a drink and they were all old,the singer was in a cold concert room 5 mins walk from the bar and wc,s. i asked them 2 open the bar in the concert room and after a lot of angry complainng we did get it open!!!,A manager came over from the other hotel 2 try and sort it out, apparantly the manager of this hotel is in hospital and they have had 5 managers walk out in the last 6 mnths? they got a night porter 2 serve in the bar he did his best but didnt have a clue, The rooms are freezing the quilts are very thin, we did get heaters but had 2 leave them on all night, which i dont think is very safe,On the 3rd night half the hotel had no electric all night and day, this again was very dangerous as these people were elderly and disabled. There was only entertainment 2 nights and it was rubbish, we all had to sit in the cold resteraunt 4 the 1 singer as they were using the function room 4 a private party, the organisation in this hotel is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!! The food was ok but again you had to que, and there was hardly any choice, the food they used was very cheap quality, brekfast was ok but the cofee was cold. and if they run out of eggs etc. then your bacon etc got cold whilr waiting for fresh food. THIS HOTEL CAN NOT CATER FOR LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE AND SHOULD NEVER EVER BE USED FOR COACH BOOKINGS THEY CAN NOT COPE!!!!! they did not make any of us feel welcome from the beginning to the end, we were not wanted there.. This holiday was the worst that this group had ever had and they go away at least twice a year and have been for many years, i travel all over the world, and i have never expericand such a poorly run hotel as this. is a big company so they really need 2 sort it out. The staff were all run off there feet and did do there best,My room was very clean thank god, the restrerant was ok but the windows were filthy, black mold on sills which can put you off the basic food. Our coach was due to leave at 9.30am this morning but every one was on there and ready 2 go home at 8,30. think that sums it up in one!!!!! lol Also its quite a long walk too the beach and main shopping center esp if you have young children. I would never go back to this dump if it was FREE!!!!! and i speak for 45 people. The bar also closed at 11pm which is crazy when people are on holiday.again just not welcome. PS i smoked in my room as did loads of people no 1 said i could or couldnt? so if you are anti smoking be warned your room may well smell of smoke!"

Room Tip: Dont book this hotel there arnt any decent rooms

We stayed here for 2 nights on a Britannia £59/night for DBB deal. For what we had paid I would have been happy with a comfortable bed and a decent breakfast but was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. Okay, they aren't very modern (old style TV and a couple of age related marks in the bathroom) but all in all very comfortable. My grandparents were in the room next door and whilst their room was initially a little cold, it soon warned up with the heater in the room. Where this hotel excels is the food. Three course buffet-style dinner was delicious. Plenty of choice and all nice and hot. We had expected to eat out on our second night, but the food was so good we decided to stay in. Breakfast was a similar story, lots of choice and lots of it - great. There was entertainment on the first night which looked to be popular although we preferred sitting in the bar playing cards. All in all, this was a good trip and we were pleasantly surprised. No doubt there will be people who pay £60 and expect the Ritz, but if your expectations are realistic you will be fine. If we had one quibble, it would be that there isn't a huge amount of space in the bar so if you go for a later dinner sitting it is likely that most seats will be taken when you come out. Service the bar was a little slow, although given the time of year I imagine that they were watching their overheads staff-wise. On our last day we had a look around the other Britannia hotel just around the corner. This looked to be recently refurbished and worth a try too.

We stayed here for four nights. We expected basic and outdated but what we got was unacceptable. Tiny box room next to generator that ran all night. Moved to better room for second night. No heating but they provided us with a heater when we asked. No water to shower and water in bath ran brown. The bar had run out of beer on the first two nights and once the delivery arrived there was no staff to man the bar! No heating in the bar/ sitting area despite weather being freezing. Everyone in the bar sat with their coats on. We won't be returning even if they gave us free accommodation.
