“Weekend trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

Weekend at the best western the Connaught hotel was excellent, rooms a bit small but clean tidy and very comfortable. Food in resturant was really lovely highly recommend. Staff very friendly especially the duty manager and the bar man from Portugal and not forgetting the girls on reception, wish we could have stayed longer.

I submitted this review on the 2nd August before being contacted by the manager on the 3rd.
so I felt it was only fair to review it.
We visited this hotel in January 2013 and We were pleasantly surprised with our visit. So I did not hesitate to book a room at the hotel when visiting this time around. We booked the Lilly Room on the second floor as the facilities offered appeared ideal. When we arrived on the 1st August we were told the jacuzzi was not working properly as it was unable to produce bubbles. We were asked if that was acceptable but no alternative was offered. Accepting the situation we booked in and went to the room which was a good size. Later that evening I went into bathroom and nearly jumped out of my skin. In the jacuzzi was a giant cockroach, one of the largest I'd ever seen. My wife walked in and ran out again. The night duty staff, two of them captured the beast after a couple of goes and took it away. My wife refused to sleep in the room after seeing the cockroach but we weren't offered any alternative. The necessary bathroom trips were fraught with expectation. The following morning we awaited a call from the manager but it never arrived. We checked out of the Lilly suite and asked to see the manager regarding the cockroach incident. After a few minutes a gentleman arrived who we are lead to believe was the manager because he never introduced himself. We expected a full apology and at least an empathetic response. We got neither telling us that they didn't put the cockroach in the jacuzzi intentionally followed by what I can only assume to be an admission when he said I've not seen one that big before. Did that mean all the other ones he'd seen in the hotel were smaller? He seemed more intent in convincing us that the hotel was not infested rather than apologising to my wife especially for the night from hell she had endured. Its unfortunate when these things go wrong but it exacerbates the situation when you receive at best lip service from the person supposed to be in charge. Leave it with me he said and we never heard from him again. Also we found another report of cockroach incursion at the hotel from a previous guest on travelpod so I think they may have a problem and the manager(?) is in denial. Shame our previous visit was excellent but we will never return. We have pictures of the beast which my wife intends to put on Facebook to warn other less intrepid travellers.

Update: After our second night at the hotel this time staying at the Lodge we checked out and we were asked to wait and speak to the manager. This time he was very apologetic explaining the action the hotel were required to take and what he had done personally to investigate what had happened. As a gesture of good will the hotel paid for our meal in the restaurant the night before. We pointed out that we felt that he hadn't dealt with the matter very well the previous morning. He accepted what we had said and we felt that in the circumstances he had done all he could to correct the situation. So in summary; the trip had been spoilt by the incident on the first night and the manager's initial response. The following day he had made a complete U turn and appeared sincere in his apology. Will we ever stay at the hotel again, I doubt it.

My girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel just for the one night to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. The staff are polite, efficient and professional. Charlotte in particular was very helpful and I presume she organised the birthday card in our room on arrival with had a voucher for 2 glasses of wine from their restaurant. The rooms are well presented and clean. The restaurant insists on a smart dress code and no mobile phones during evening meal which encourages a nice atmosphere. The food was delicious, well presented and served in good time. We also enjoyed a massage in the hotel from real professionals. Will be staying again hopefully in the near future. Would recommend.

When you are greeted with a smile and someone who is exceptionally helpful it suggests you'll not be disappointed with your stay... and that's exactly what I can confirm!

Great staff, every one of them that I had the pleasure of dealing with, and plenty of them to pay attention to you. Excellent food, room service was fast, heated plates and very tasty... equally breakfast was top notch! Gym and swimming pool all very nice, hotel location perfect.

I'll be back soon!

Room Tip: I've stayed in both a standard and superior, both equally nice, superior a bit bigger.

Just back from a 4 day break without the kids for the first time in years, picked hotel due to comments on this site and location. I must comment on the fantastic service from your restaurant staff each night in Blake's and at breakfast, have traveled for many years overseas on business and have only rarely had this level of service. Food was excellent and so nice to dress up for dinner each night something which made each night a special occasion. Leisure facility's were good and location has good access to the beach, will hopefully be back soon.

We have just returned from a 12 night stay at this lovely hotel. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by reception staff, who were very kind, polite and efficient. The porter also helped with our luggage, in which we did have a lot of.The room smelt very clean and airy, the bathroom was spotlessly clean, which is very important to us.Clean towels provided daily if required. Unfortuately there isn't air conditioning, but there was a fan inside the cupboard. This was most welcoming as the bedroom did get rather hot, especially end of July into August 2014. But our weather has got a lot hotter and with the storms we have been having. Breakfast was 7am until 10 am Monday to Friday, and on Saturday & Sundays it was 7.30 am to 10.30 am. Breakfast was served in Blakes restaurant, and if the weather was superb you could sit out in the Terrace garden, we did this many times. Breakfast consisted of Cereals, croissants, chocolate croissants, porridge, different varieties of melon, yogurts, toasts, 3 types of fish also, and of course the fried breakfast. My husband had fried breakfast every day, at home he only ever eats cereal. The fried breakfast consisted of sausages, bacon, tomatoes, fried egg, fried slice, scrambled egg, baked beans, and mushrooms. He said to me that the fried breakfast was the best he has ever had, it was always cooked just right. There was also toast, and what was great to see , was they can do Gluten/Wheat free Brown or white bread, and also we only drink Lactofree milk. I just want to say Nick and all the waiter and waitresses made sure that every day we had our Gluten free Bread/Toast and our milk( just make sure you send a letter or a email to The Hotel to insure that they know your dietary needs. I have many allergies, 80 allergies altogether. This is so welcoming to see Best Western Hotels listening to people who stay at Hotels. The hotel had a informal bar area which was lovely to sit in day or night. You could sit in very comfortable sofa's and just have a tea or coffee and a variety of Latte coffee, (very nice indeed, even made with our Lactofree milk, so thankyou very much indeed, or just alcoholic drink. They served sandwiches, home made scones, (even Gluten free) . Pizza's, pasta dishes, there was Omelettes.they also could you skinned fries, or chunky chips, salads. But if you wanted to dine in style you could book a table in the evening at The Hotel's Blakes Restaurant. You do need to dress up, ( no Jeans etc allowed)if you wish to dine in here. It did look very swish and romantic. A nice looking menu, fish and steaks etc. we Unfortuately didn't dine in here. There is a Drawing Room to sit in as well, with a bar. You could sit in here if you just wanted to read the morning papers, or even play cards, or have a drink, or just sit there quietly. Downstairs there was a fabulous Spa, a lovely looking pool and a spa jacuzzi, in which was Devine, it was very warm indeed and very relaxing. There was also a steam room, and a sauna, in which my hubby loved. There were two types of gyms as well, and all guests staying at the hotel could use these facilities as often as they liked free of charge, just make sure you have a £1.00 coin for the locker. If you wished to have massages, and nails painted ,see the booklet for their prices. I had a pedicure, and my toenails still look lovely. On our 1st weekend of staying at Hotel I would like to say thank you so much to Nuno, who made it lovely for us when we sat in the front garden area, in which I had family travel from the Isle Of Wight, my Grandad, my Uncle and my Cousin. Nuno made sure my Grandad was comfortable as he could see he was elderly and frail. He got my Grandad a cushion and placed it behind his back, also got us a jug of iced water as it was a very hot day. We ordered various items from the menu and drinks. Nuno is a very polite, kind, charming waiter. On another day Me and my hubby came back from the town, and obviously I am very unwell indeed, and while out, I had my usual attack, as when we got to reception desk, the very polite young lady who has only been I believe at the hotel for 2 weeks, badge said Trainee, her name I think is Bherta, please forgive us if we have spelt name wrong.she looked at me straight away, and she has only spoke to us twice before this, and she asked was I ok, I said no, I am having a attack, she said I looked very tired and exhausted, is there anything we can do for you, she asked if she could call me a Dr. I said no Thank you, I hopefully will be fine. These attacks can last 2 hours to sometimes a day. I have Dystonia, in which my facial muscles and all my muscles spasm and I have severe pain. The fatigue that hits me, can be so severe, so it badly effects me. I can hardly talk ,and my speech can go. Also Ricardo came out to front desk and he was also very concerned for me. They both said please make sure you make contact with us, if you need a Dr, my attack was still with me at lunchtime the next day. Just want to say Reception staff, everyone has been very efficient, kind, polite. Another time we had coffee in our room, and I was still having my normal attack, and somehow my coffee went all over my legs, on the carpet, a little bit went on the bed sheet, I was so worried about the carpet, Rich spoke with the duty manager one evening.but the manager was more worried about my legs and he said I am a first aider, please may I check your legs, I said honest I am fine, I am just very upset that the coffee has gone over the carpet. Again, he was not worried, about this, he know I was very unwell, and upset. He still asked the next day If I was ok. Thank you again for your help.also we had another evening where we had room service, a coffee, and the Waiter Jarek, again very helpful, kind and polite, who realised he hadn't given us our Lactofree milk, we said don't worry, but he insisted going back down 3 flights of stairs , and coming back with it. All the staff are exceptional, everyone gives 100% to all guests. They always say Good Morning, always smile, everyone looks happy in their job. Everyone is polite, friendly, kind, and yes making sure that guests are given extra in care and attentiveness. Also Andy The Maintenance man, checked our bathroom door handle, when we first arrived, we thought it was going to fall off, but he checked this out straight way when we first arrived. Also our balcony door, we couldn't lock it, this was sorted out very efficiently. So thank you very much indeed Andy. Also thank you to all the waiters and waitresses who served us with coffee and tea and toast, at Breakfast, and when we had drinks in the day time and evening. Very hardworking.a big Thank you to Nick Rutigliano who is the Blakes Restaurant Manager, he is the most charming, kind and polite Maître d'. Nick knew our room number everyday, he made sure we had the correct milk and my Gluten free Toast. He was a very friendly man, who made sure everything was ok every day. In fact he made me laugh, he is a very friendly Manager, to be so happy at 7 am every day. We had a couple of chuckle's every morning. Also a big thank you to Paul Plumley and the waiter, who helped me on the Sunday, the day before we left the hotel. We were sitting in Drawing Room, and we both feeling a little bit warm, but continued sitting there, as the weather was raining, and the other informal bar was closed. As I turned to my husband, he said He felt really hot, and I suddenly thought , oh know, Rich looked liked he was going to pass out. I found the lovely waiter, sorry I have forgotten your name, you always helped us or spoke to us, I said please come quickly, my husband is going to pass out, it was very hot in The Drawing Room, there was no air circulating. I got back to Rich and his head was back on the chair, but he hadn't passed right out, and very quickly Paul Plumley The General Manager arrived, and sat with us, he made sure a Rich was ok, and made Rich drink a pint of iced cold water, and a apple juice and two biscuits, once Rich felt like he could move, Paul said for us to sit in The Lobby, where there was a breeze, and more doors were opened up. Thank you again to Paul Plumley and The Waiter for making sure Rich was ok. We went back to bedroom, and I made sure Rich felt a lot better before we went out to a The Seafront.
This Hotel deserves 5 stars, staff and facilities are exceptional . Thank you to everyone. This is a Happy Ship.Hope to see you again soon, whenever we can do it.
Kind regards

Jo & Richard North

we have just returned from a 6 day stay at this hotel and can say without any fear that it is one of the best hotels we have stayed in ,from the moment we walked into the reception until the day we checked out we were treated very well ,the staff were some of the most pleasant, helpful we had ever come across and nothing was too much trouble to them .the room was ample ,clean ,tidy ,bed was comfortable with extra pillows if required ,one little moan was the lack of clothes space ,no under bed storage for cases etc ,but it was only a standard room we booked (try bigger next time ) we ate in the brasserie several nights and the food was very good and well presented.
All round very very good ,,,well done to all at the Connaught

Room Tip: go for the next room up from a standard room ,,for a bit more space

What a great review Mick, thank you very much. The Brasserie is very popular now since the refurbishment was completed and guests really love the fact that it can be extended onto the terrace - brilliant with all this lovely weather!! Enjoy the rest of the Summer.
