Just returned from a three night stay at the Wessex over xmas period. I had read mixed reviews prior to staying. My opinion is that don't be put off. I know everyone is entitled to heir view but I think some of the comments are a little unwarranted. Main plus points were staff helpfulness - all excellent from the restaurant staff to the leisure club - all very accommodating and couldn't do enough and all seemed cheerful. This makes a pleasant change from some of the more expensive hotels where patrons can seem an inconvenience. Quality of food also excellent. Breakfast - probably one of the best around in the 'buffet style' format - and I've had a few as I travel with work a fair amount! Evening meals were also great - good choice from a set menu - arrived in a timely fashion and arrived at your table hot. The restaurant manager came around the table several times to ensure everything was ok and he was present throughout service. Waiting staff couldn't do enough - pleasant and approachable and lots around. Leisure club great - decent sized main pool with adjacent hot 'plunge pool' and well heated and looked well maintained to me. Again, although pool is unsupervised, a member of the leisure club staff patrolled the pool occasionally to ensure all was well - plentiful supply of pool towels. Gym seemed to be in use aswell. Standard of bedroom good - large and had a bathroom with separate shower cubicle with bath - bathroom spotless and although not brand new certainly not dated. I should add this was Premier Room so can't comment on the standard rooms. Bedroom had a comfortable mattress, quality furnishings, fridge and flat screen TV. All in all would definitely stay again and location of hotel great aswell. One quick word on décor - yes the hotel is old, dated and stating the obvious that a refurbishment needed. The reality is though that most people who stay here couldn't afford to do so if millions were spent on an overly extravagant upgrade - as the prices the hotel would then command would make it too expensive for most who stay here now. There needs to be a balance. Plenty of hotels in Bournemouth have gone to the wall as they haven't adapted to their market and as a regular traveller there is more to a great hotel that the state of soft furnishings! PS Large free car park too - irritating when you go a hotel and have to pay extra - not so at the Wessex.
