“absolutely fabulous weeke us the option of eithvend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

lovely welcome at about 5pm on Friday, shown to our room with Jacuzzi bath. It was lovely but cold as the radiator wouldn't turn on. When we reported this to the lovely young man in reception he immediately tried to bleed the rad (unsuccessfully) He returned with an electric radiator & the keys to an alternative room. He suggested we wait about an hour & a half to see if it was warm enough then if we wished we could move rooms, However in the mean time the radiator started working so we stayed put. Breakfast was amazing with a fabulous variety & top quality produce there were 3 very cheerful attentive waiters, the staff overall were amazing & nothing was too much trouble, we were on a kgb vouchers but were in no way treated any differently to full paying customers. I would jump at the chance to stay here again, highly recommended

I am glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated our service. I am so sorry your room was cold when you arrived. We did track down the source of the problem with the radiator, which was due a radiator in the kings room which needed bleeding. So we learned something and have been able to change out processes to enable us to avoid such problems in the future.

We take pride in treating all our guests with the same courtesy and level of service and I am most pleased to know that our team did well, and will transmit the message to them. So thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We do take them seriously and they help us improve.

We look forward to seeing you here again soon.

We took my mother in law here for her 91st birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed the tea absolutely delicious. The scones were superb. The staff were lovely and made us feel most welcome. We were shown the kings room and other memorabilia to do with Lilly Langtry. We all agreed it was a very pleasurable afternoon despite the awful weather outside.

Dear Visitor,

It is really nice to know that you enjoyed the tea and your visit to us despite the weather we are all suffering at the moment. Before coming to Bournemouth 35 years ago I lived a long time in Southampton and ran a business at the Bargate. So it is especially pleasant to me to know that you enjoyed your visit.

Recently stayed at this small privately run hotel for 2 nights. We had a couple of minor issues which initially put us on the wrong footing, however these were sorted out and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a room with Jacuzzi bath. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food (breakfast and dinner) were excellent. So nice to get a hot fresh breakfast as opposed to the standard hotel tepid buffet. The hotel is in an ideal location to springboard into Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole, with buses only a short walk away. Price wise, very reasonable. Some rooms may seem small, but they have all the necessary amenities. We didn't get chance to use the fitness centre at a nearby hotel, so can't comment. We look forward to going back later in the year.

We stayed only 1 night and were sorry we couldn't stay longer. We were put in the Sarah Bernhardt Room (emoting optional) and found it large with a fireplace (non-working) and a cramped but adequate bathroom with plenty of hot water and a huge tub/shower. Breakfast was in the lovely ballroom and was ample and delicious. The house is chock full of memorabilia, the staff was very friendly and interested in chatting about the house and its history, including the filming of some of "Lillie," starring Francesca Annis (whom we had met twice). Great fun, and comfortable. We had dinner at the hotel, which was pleasant but not outstanding.

Dear Guests,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review on tripadvisor. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay, the hotel and its history. I hope to see you if you come down this way again. If you do I recommend you try our Edwardian banquet on Saturday evenings which as well a a six course meal includes a sequence with Lillie Langtry (or rather her double) talking about her life and times.

We stayed for one night in the Grand National room. What a gorgeous room with fab jacuzzi bath. Spotless and spacious. The staff were all lovely and couldn't do enough to help. Breakfast was delicious and very relaxed. Overall a lovely romantic night in a gorgeous hotel.

We stayed over new year for 2 nights including the gala masquerade ball on NY eve. The building is impressive and with the links to the Langtry period is sprinkled about the hotel. The multi cultural staff are excellent and made our stay comfortable and very pleasant. The meals are very good and made on the premises by a good chef. Now the bad bits... The place has been modernised to a degree ... But the furniture and bathroom was chipped, scraped and rusty. For the price one would not expect a cheap rusty iron shower curtain with very cheap shower rings. We particularly were looking forward to a luxury jacuzzi and the tiny bathroom and tardy fittings disappointed us. The bathroom was really tiny. Far from luxurious. The NY eve ball was fitting for the elderly with an elderly gentleman on an electric organ (see photo). Reminded me of Jess Yates but less talent.Needless to say we left well before 12. Overall this is a nice place but very overpriced relying on the history of the building. The staff are great but we won't be back. We did not bother to walk the few minutes to go to the shared fitness centre.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give your feedback this will help us enormously in improving things in the future and I am very pleased that you liked the hotel, and found your stay comfortable and the service and food so good.

Of course any price seems too high if it did not meet or exceed your expectations and I do understand you did not enjoy the entertainment.

Not long ago the hotel was redecorated in a ''distressed look'' which was very fashionable at the time. However this does not excuse the use of cheap fittings and clearly chipped furniture in your room and these will be replaced/renovated as part of this years maintenance program. In an historic building it is not easy to change the size of the bathroom. For your next visit should
you change your mind about coming back please do not hesitate to mention your expectations when booking.

Music is of course a matter of taste and while some people really liked it others like you were disappointed or felt that it was not as good as prior years. We are revising our strategy on this and considering alternatives either having a different level of entertainment or having a separate dance room and entertainment for those who prefer a different style. It is no excuse but it is extremely difficult to book the right entertainment for a New Years party. What I can commit to you is that should you return for a New Years party at the end of 2014 you will find an amazing change in the entertainment. Lets hope it will be more to your taste! Again do not hesitate to contact me to discover its style at the time of booking.

Thank you once again for helping us improve.

Excellent from start to finish. We couldn't have wished for better.
The staff attention to us was second to none- the meal was excellent as was the evening buffet.
Our room was first class - bed very comfortable and cleanliness first rate.
Breakfast the following morning was great too.
