“Best pub/B&B in Totnes!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

We stayed at this quirky, friendly pub for 4 nights. We received a warm welcome and the room we had (overlooking the lovely pub garden) was delightful, with a huge bathroom and excellent shower. TV reception is pretty poor, but that's a function of the thick stone walls (the building is seriously old!) and frankly there is plenty to do in Totnes without resorting to the TV. Parking is slightly tricky, but OK once it was expained, and we didn't need to use the car while we were there as the pub is only 2 minutes walk from the centre. The pub is a hub of the community and it didn't take long before we felt like we were coming home. Kathy and Rob support the local arts scene by hosting regular music and poetry nights and they also serve a range of fabulous local real ales. The pub is dog friendly and they also have two cats, of which only one is ever seen, at breakfast time! Breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruit salad, locally sourced ingredients and yummy croissants. They don't do food in the evening, but there are plenty of places nearby, most notably the Kingsbridge Inn, which does superb food. We wouldn't hesitate to return :-)

Room Tip: Ask for the Garden Room.

Just a quick note to say we are working on the TV reception issue and expect it to be better from this point forwards.
Thanks for the feedback.

We called in a few times over the weekend with the Totnes festival on, BBQ, and bands were also listed. A fine selection of real ales and ciders on draft, approx 40, a good atmosphere with young children, a few dogs, and a broad range of drinkers sitting inside and out.

We will be returning, have yet to try out the food.

The Bay Horse is for those Pub lovers of you, looking for an old style bar with friendly owners, great food and even better ales. It's small, yet comfy, find a seat and join in with the various music events going on, you won't be disappointed!

Totnes is a fabulous old market town and the Bay Horse is easily the best of the pubs there.
A traditional pub without being old-fashioned, it is both inviting and comfortable, whilst also offering very nice accommodation. The Coach House suite at the back is wonderful - full of character and with a bathroom bigger and better than most you will have ever seen.
The pub also has a quite remarkable garden (a real hit in summer) and is a proper ale house, being listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, although other drinks are equally excellent and the food is top notch for simple pub-fare.
I managed to catch one of their Beer & Cider Festivals, which included fabulous ales and lots of live music, not to mention a great atmosphere. Best thing was that the pub seems to be full of locals, which is always a good sign!

Room Tip: Coach House suite is amazing, although probably worth remembering that pub garden is active until la...

I stayed at the Bay Horse Inn in Totnes while I was attending the fabulous Ways with Words literary festival in Dartington. I struggled to find reviews so admit to being dubious and my fears were TOTALLY unfounded.

The B&B is above a pub and run by the owners (very friendly) and I believe there are 2 rooms currently and more in the offing. They were very honest about the possible noise levels from the pub and I was in the room facing the road and didn't hear a pipsqueak on a Saturday and Sunday night. Apparently the other room is noisier depending on what's going on in the pub (they have jazz nights sometimes) but I had a quick peak and it looked like a fabulous large room!

Anyway - my room was nicely decorated and had kettle, biscuits, tea/coffee, flask of milk, hairdryer, etc. etc. Lovely bathroom with shower and frankly all just lovely.

Breakfast was to order the night before and was delicious - down in the pub.

The B&B is at the top of the High St so just a few steps away from the shops and restaurants of Totnes.

I totally recommend the Bay Horse. Inexpensive...friendly...well-decorated.
