“Friendly and historic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

Went to this hotel with large family gathering. Very friendly staff and the Doombar is delicious! The staff were baby friendly and there was a lovely atmosphere.
Totnes is a beautiful, historic town and has a superb cheese shop.

This is a town centre hotel which has all the advantges of centrality and all the disadvantages ( noise limited parking etc) of older town centre hotels.
Good booking, nice staff , upgrade , pleasant room with good facilities atthe front but frankly it would probably be a bit noisy wherever you were but-- temper this that totnes is a good town and you really need to be in it.
We were admitted to a room so hot we coulnt breathe and had to ask for the maintenance to turn the rads down as no stats, they came super promptly and turned them off and it sort of worked, however the housekeeperor receptionist had left us a swwet handwritten note in the room prior to booking in to verify we would be happy, pity she didnt notice it was a sauna.
sometimes young staff are not well trained or not paid enough or both .
Totnes -a place i've always wanted to visit has a majorly good cafe the curators just across the road from the hotel , massively good coffee. The rest of it - well call me cynical but shops which are encouraged to be green and independent and successful are selling large amounts of tat made in third world countries which is not quite the vibe i expected.

Room Tip: Daniel Defoe was the room we had ( ask for radiators to be turnred down prior)

In the best location in Totnes. Stayed in the beautiful Agatha Christie suite where every facility was provided. Despite having a recent fire there was no evidence of this apart from the car park being closed but arrangements had been made by the hotel to park in the adjacent Morrisons car park, and we were informed of this by a telephone call prior to our stay. Staff friendly and helpful. All in all we had a great time and will definitely return.

Stayed on a late sunday night deal to have a break from camping in the rain! Found it to be a great offer which inc. dinner. Stayed in a lovely standard room overlooking the main street - Room very comfortable and well furnished. The hotel had a friendly relaxed atmosphere and the carvey dinner was excellent. Thanks to the staff, but in particular to Justine in the restaurant for the welcoming service, it makes such a difference having friendly staff. Keep it up. Would def. stay again.

Had a fabulous 3 nights here- only wish it were longer- time went too quickly! Food here excellent- even my gluten free diet was tremendously catered for!! Even had an afternoon
g-free scones cream tea here!! Our room was superb!! We stayed in the Agatha Christie Suite (room)- one of the loveliest rooms have ever stayed in, for sure!! Liked the touch of adding some Agatha Christie novels in the room, too. Yet, what especially loved besides the really comfortable bed was the jacuzzi bath in the ensuite!! The staff were really friendly as well as helpful!! It was a perfect location, too! Totnes is really a beautiful quirky town. Lovely walks for our dalmatian dog Sebastian, too! Sent a thank you letter very shortly after stay yet it has taken me far too long to put a review of the hotel on here!! Staying here you will feel like a prince or a princess, that is for certain!! You sure get five star treatment, too!! Many hotels around the world could learn a great deal from this hotel in how to run a hotel to make guests feel special! It is affordable luxury!! This was my treat to my hubby- a treat he loved plus we loved as a couple!!

Would highly recommend this hotel to everyone as well as the Agatha Christie Room.

All the staff did a phenomenally good job!!

Cannot praise the hotel highly enough!!

Room Tip: Agatha Christie Room- maybe slightly more money than a standard room yet it is well worth the extra...

Thank you all so much especially Robin and Joe for making my mums 70th birthday so special at our function in the ballroom. The food was fantastic, the staff were brilliant and the overall total experience was magical. Bedroom and facilities could not have been better and we will definately be back. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a oustanding experience either for functions or a meal, drink, place to stay etc as no place I know will ever match the Royal 7 stars of Totnes.
