We have just returned from The Tor Park at Torquay on a Shearings 5 day inclusive coach holiday. What a difference 5 months makes.! We were there in December 2012 and yes the hotel was a little tired but now what a difference! New chairs and a newly decorated entertainments area. The hotel had been refurbished. All the staff very helpful and always had a smile for you.

Dear Oldfolkbeds

Thank you for posting your lovely 5 star review of the Tor Park. It really is satisfying when the work that is being put in to improving the hotel is being noticed and appreciated by guests - especially returning guests. We still have plans going forward over the next few months to improve the public areas even more and I will look forward to your return to see the difference.

Just came back from weekend at Torpark hotel on a Shearing Weekend. This is step up from their Paignton hotel Food better and rooms are bigger. Bus stop outside to get you around, very handy. Staff wonderful, especially the girls behind the bar. Well worth the money Coach driver was brilliant giving lots of information and showing us all the sights

Was worried by all the negative remarks but my wife and I found this hotel to be perfectly acceptable for the price you pay. The food was ok except for the last night when there were far too many potatoes and not enough green vegetables and the pudding (pears and ice cream) was almost inedible, the pears being extremely hard!

The biggest criticism I have is that the bar by no means allowed for the fact it was a bank holiday weekend with over 70 people staying. On the first night they had no white wine and, by the second night, had run out of lager! The next night lager was provided in pint cans - and then there were only a few. Very bad planning and management I'm afraid.

Apart from that, it was ok for the money paid out. Would stay again but they need to sort out their managing of the bar!!

Dear Potter75_11

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our hotel. It is very pleasing that you found the hotel to be good value for the money you paid. The situation with the bar whilst you were here was below the standard we expect to provide and i have put measures in place to ensure that this does not happen again. I am glad your experience has not discouraged you from returning and i look forward to welcoming you back to the Tor Park in the near future

We arrived last Friday afternoon for a weekend break half board, 4 free drinks each day and an excursion to Plymouth via Dartmoor national park plus coach travel from our home town. We also enjoyed entertainment each evening, Saturday nights comedian was excellent even though we had seen him before when we stayed at another Shearings hotel in February. The price per person for this holiday would barely have covered fuel costs for someone travelling from Cheshire to Torquay so it was a real bargain.
The hotel has a tv lounge with daily newspapers but we did not find this until our last day as it was accessed to the left of the reception area and our room was to the right, but it is a nice comfortable area, especially popular with people who wish to watch tv on a larger screen.
As always with Shearings hotels, there was a varied menu which included vegetarian sausages and a selection of salads if you couldn`t find an alternative from the varied evening meal menu.
Getting to our room involved a series of corridors and steps but a lift was available if required. We didn`t ask to upgrade our room as we were satisfied with the facilities in ours which included plenty of tea, coffee and milk on the hospitality tray, more than adequate space in the wardrobe and drawers, and a tv that offered the 5 main channels plus sky news.
The bathroom was quite large with a bath and fairly new shower over plus a heated towel rail and radiator. The room was in a position where there was no service on my mobile phone but we don`t use mobiles often so it wasn`t a problem.
To get to the town and harbour area it is a 20 minute walk mostly downhill but probably a bit longer coming back due to the inevitable uphill return, but there are bus stops located right outside the hotel that take you to the town one way, or if you feel like exploring further afield there is a stop that takes you to Exeter the other way.
All the staff were extremely friendly and efficient and a map of the immediate area is available from reception if required.
Our driver Mike was brilliant we could not fault him, he was helpful and extremely informative regarding points of interest on our journey, he took us to a large garden centre on our return home which was far better than the motorway services. The only comment we could make is that the coach was not a Shearings coach but another company vehicle hired by Shearings so we did not get the extra leg room we are used to, but Mike sold us tea and coffee for 50p to save us paying motorway prices which is something Shearings have never offered us before on a UK holiday.

My husband and I and 2 friends stayed at the Hotel from the 19th - 22nd April, and found it to be very good value. Admittedly the decor in the main areas was quite dated but the staff especially Tyler and the ladies behind the bar were very efficient and friendly. We really enjoyed the entertainment each evening. The choice of meals was good and well cooked and served hot!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Stayed at the Tor Park Hotel from the 8-10th April 2013 whilst me and a friend visited family in Newton Abbot. The hotel itself is fairly easy to find, the sat nav took us straight to the front door. The decor of all the main parts of the hotel is VERY dated, circa 1980 and is in desperate need of a make over- flowery wall papers, patterned carpets, velvet curtains and an 'old' smell are not becoming. Although, having said that, the bedroom we stayed in thankfully had plain (not flowery or frilly!) and was spotlessly clean- especially the bathroom, which I always have high standards for. Again, the furniture was dated, especially the 13inch box style television- but hey, everything was in full working order. We didn't have much interaction with the staff, but when we did, it was all business, they wern't very interested in us and didn't ask us how we were etc, but everyone had basic manners so can't really complain. Check-in was quite rushed when there didnt seem to be much else going on. Also note that you do have to pay for your stay when you check in, not when you depart- which means that checking out was very quick & just a simple dropping off of the key, which is always nice. Breakfast was okay, not amazing, but not bad either- just your average fry up... small sausages though. Also bare in mind that breakfast is only served for one hour between 8-9am, so not ideal for those who like their sleep!
Me & my friend we literally only at the hotel to sleep, therefore it didn't matter to us that the decor wasn't to our taste, the staff was unfriendly or that things werent perfect, and seeing as though we paid very little for a two night break, it was fine. But if you are someone who likes to spend a lot of time at the hotel, (or even eat at it!) then i would not recommend you stay here! This is a place for people who are planning on spending all day out exploring, and then just need somewhere cheap to stay. Ideal for students or groups of young people looking for a cheap holiday. NOT a place for a romantic weekend, or even family holiday, there isnt much atmosphere to the place, other than 'old and cheap'.
This review isnt a complaint at all, you really do just get what you pay for though, so do expect this.

Dear SRS73
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Our Hotel offers 'value for money' accommodation which i am glad you received on your visit. I am very surprised that you found our staff 'unfriendly' as in over 100 reviews almost every reviewer has commented on the friendliness and the high standard of service given by our staff. Our Public areas are about to undergo an upgrade and refurbishment and i do hope you will return to see the result
