“Trip with group from Age UK”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

We came with a group of people from Merton Age UK from 20th to 24th May & were greeted by Ken & Raj, who were friendly & welcoming. Nothing being too much trouble for them.
Chris, the chef, also welcomed us warmly & fed us with a choice of evening meal, cooked with love.
As mentioned by Tomcook-davies it was excellent value, which has to be the most important factor.
The evening entertainment was geared appropriately for the age group, with audience participation at exactly the right level (quite an achievement) !

Stayed this last May Day Bank Holiday weekend at the Abbey Court Hotel in Torquay from Friday to Monday.

Having just read the other reviews down the margin as I started mine, noticed a review from Stonerow who is a user of Trip Advisor and was part of the same group we were in.

As our coach arrived after quite a long day travelling due to accidents and roadworks beyond our control, we were met by one of the owners Ken who came straight onto the coach, introduced himself, welcomed us to Torquay and informed us of some safety issues and how the hotel was laid out, stairs and lifts etc.

We entered the hotel and were met by Kens wife, Raj and the rooms and keys were allocated in an organised manner.

The hotel is according to Ken one of the owners under a listed building status so he is limited as to what he can do to the outside of the building but having only been there 9 months or so, he and his associates and staff are starting to work through the building on a programme of improvement.

Whilst the building is old, we had a room on the second floor, number 29 and this had a view to the rear of the building and was over towards the sea and gives a good view of the sea and Torquay.

It was a nice big room, compared to some we had seen as number 6 was a narrow room.

The beds were warm and comfortable at night and the bathroom big enough.

The shower fitment on the bath taps sometimes played up a little bit but didn't spoil anything.

The breakfasts were simple but well cooked as were the evening meals.

Chris is the chef and is very easy to get on with and we also had tea and coffee served to us after our evening meals by Chris in the room overlooking the pool and I found that rather nice and different as oppose to the pretentious comment on a previous post re this Hotel.

As highlighted by Stonerow on her review, Chris also in an evening met everyone in the bar and invited all the guests to come into the restaurant for evening meal which again was a nice I felt professional touch and haven't experienced that in a hotel either.

You get what you pay for and if you pay hundreds of pounds for your accommodation and service from the hotel, that is what you would expect.

But when you are paying as little as what we did for our coach weekend excursion then we felt that it was value for the money paid.

Ken arranged a disco for our group on the Saturday evening and he openly admitted they hadn't organised this type of entertainment before so he was keen to see how it would go.

The DJ was fine, plenty of selection of music and kept our group entertained and it was a good night in.

The hotel is a short walk down to the sea front and then a short pleasant walk along the promenade into Torquay.

When we came to leave on the Monday morning, once the coach was loaded and passengers all on board we were waved goodbye and wished a safe journey by Ken and Chris together as they stood on the hotel steps to see us off. Not had that sort of service from a hotel owner and chef in any hotel I have been in.

On the Sunday evening during the meal, Chris the chef went around all the guests to enquire if anyone wanted any sandwiches for the homeward journey the following day.

He offered a selection and they were ready for collection on Monday morning as we headed for the coach.

We purchased for our son a boxed cream tea as he loves them and on asking the bar staff on the Sunday night if we could keep the clotted cream in one of the hotel fridges and collect on the Monday morning, it was no trouble and when I saw Chris on the Monday morning, he knew about the clotted cream for collection so staff at the premises communicate well.

Overall the stay and Hotel was okay and I would possibly consider staying there again.

We stayed for 3 nights has a group booking and had the hotel to ourselves, Nothing was too much trouble for the owners Ken & Raj who greeted us like long lost friends, they even put a disco on for us to compliment our 60's/70's fancy dress night. Chris the chef came out of the kitchen to introduce himself and he escorted us from the bar into the dining room each evening.
The hotel itself is a little tired in places but in the present financial climate who has the money for refurbishment?
The food was varied and hot, the bar well stocked with branded drinks and the hotel was clean and tidy with comfortable beds who could ask for more! They say that you get what you pay for - we think that we got more!
Thank you to Ken Raj Chris and the rest of the staff for looking after us.

We booked via a newspaper ad and got 2 nightsl bed, Breakfast and evening meal for £55 per person ... cheap as you like , the best thing was the food as we had plans we only had dinner once it was lovely 3 courses and coffee to finish a lovely roast dinner all the food was gorgeous and plentiful, the breakfast was lovely , cereal followed by fry up and toast .
The hotel itself is possibly a bit dated and a bit scruffy round the edges but it suited its purpose for us ,staff were happy and helpful, my only compliant was the room itself was a bit grubby and could have been cleaned a bit better but it wasn't filthy , we didn't use the pool or the bar as we had plans
Its a ten min downhill walk to town bit stiffer on the way back but it is on a good bus route.
I'd prob stay here again at the price

Just come back from our stay at this Hotel. We were on a mystery trip with a coach party and we were very impressed with everything. The hotel is an old one with plenty of character and lovely features.Alright it needs a bit of T.L.C. in parts but on the whole it had a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere and we really enjoyed staying there. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was all home cooked by our brilliant chef Chris. So we wouldn't hesitate it recommending it to our friends. Excellent value for money !!! best wishes Carol and Vic
