“Well-run hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2010

Stayed a couple of nights recently as part of a Leisuretime (South Wales) coach tour
Although a single traveller I had one of the most comfortable double beds I've ever encountered. My room was bright and airy, however the bathroom area was minute whilst the reception on the modern flat screen was variable to put it mildly.
The meals were well cooked and very tasty whilst the waiting staff were very efficient. The lounge area was small and intimate whilst the cabaret, especially the singer on the Fiday evening, was better than average
All in all, this was an excellent, vaue for money 2-star hotel and I would definately stay there again!

Big thank you to Pam, Bob and there wonderfull staff at the Maycliffe Hotel, Torquay. The food was fresh and was beautiful home-cooked. Plenty of choice on the menu. Nothing was a problem to the management and staff. The hotel was spotlessly clean. We visited the hotel with National holidays this Easter (2010). The drinks where very reasonably priced for at hotel. We had a nice surprise on Easter Sunday morning, there was an Easter egg under our cups which was a nice touch and typical of the hotel. Really enjoyed our four easter break there.

I stayed at this hotel with 7 friends through Leisuretime in Cardiff. Staff were very friendly and could not do enough. Food was fresh, hot and plentiful. Rooms were small and basic but very clean. As the weather was bad did not venture out but seemed very high up. Would definitely recommend.

We visited the Maycliffe Hotel in Aug 09 and enjoyed our four night stay. It is a clean, well run and organised hotel run by a small team of friendly people. Service in the dining room was a bit slow but the food was worth waiting for and was freshly cooked. Our room was adequate in size but not over generous and had a nice bathroom which was very clean. The small flat screen TV with freeview channels was mounted high up, in the wrong place for bedtime viewing, some screens cannot be seen properly when viewed from the side or below and the best place to view in our room was standing directly in front of the TV, not very relaxing! When the occupants of the room above walked around we could hear them due to squeaky floor boards which disturbed us on a couple of occasions during the night.
Yes, the hotel is situated near the top of a series of hills and we didn't enjoy the steep climb back to the Maycliffe but taxi's apparently cost less than a fiver from the town centre although we never needed to use one, taking a steady walk instead. The area where the Maycliffe is located is very quiet and away from the hussle and bussle of the main town but only ten minutes walk down to the main shops at Union Street and Fleet Street. Union Street can be reached via the multi storey car park and pedestrian bridge or via some steps just to the left of the car park entrance ramp. (See map) It also takes just over ten minutes to the harbour area via Cary Road, Warren Road and down some steps to Cary Parade. Obviously taking a bit longer on the return journey!
This was our first trip to this area, travelling to Torquay by coach as part of a National Holidays tour and we found the whole of the Torbay area to be a pleasant holiday resort. Local Stagecoach buses are frequent and cover most areas and with a competitively priced day pass getting around is easy and over 60's free passes are accepted on all services. We would consider returning to the area and if we do we would be happy to stay at the Maycliffe, a number of guests in our party had previously stayed in the hotel and were happy to return, one of them liking it so much that she visited every few weeks. For independent travellers the room rates offer good value for money and if visiting by car there is plenty of space for car parking in the car park and on the surrounding quiet roads.

just returned from the maycliffe hotel, (8 of us in total) not one of the best places to stay, room was clean, but bathroom tiny, to get in the shower was a work of art. Food portions very small, waiter very very rude. hardly any communication with owners. ceiling coming down on landing outside our room. I know you get what you pay for, but good manners cost nothing, Not a place I would recommend!!
