“An embarrassment to the "hotel" business (must read)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Me and my mother booked a trip to Torquay with National holidays and the hotel advertised was the Bay Trecarn. This hotel looked great and had super facilities and we were really looking forward to arriving. Unfortunately it was the Maycliffe that the coach pulled up outside of. Upon first impressions, the building didn't look terrible but it was concerning that the windows on the ground floor, as well as some on the first floor, had bars on them. We were greeted by Pam who was very bossy and herded us all up like cattle in the "bar" for registration. It's worth pointing out that the lounge in this building holds 19 people whereas our coach consisted of 48 people. Upon receiving our room number we began to navigate to it through its heavily congested, ridiculously thin corridors. We arrived at our room only to be grossly horrified. The first thing we seen was the filthy, thick, grimy red carpet that we never once stepped bare footed on. This is unforgivable allowing it to get this worn as a carpet greatly influences a room. The next thing we noticed was the distinct lack of storage. One unit of three drawers for 2 adults. Even this unit was greatly worn and chipped. The tv, which was the size of a dvd case, was cellotaped to its bracket meaning it was only truly viewable in one position. The bathroom was really not up to anything and was no bigger than a few foot. It was also furnished in avocado which is way past its fashion date. The shower was actually frightening to switch on so we never tried as it was so old, I bet it is the only building left with them, in the world. When we looked at the beds we were greatly concerned. The mattress protectors were covered by an abundance of hairs and various other bits and upon calling pam up to see for herself, we were talked to like infants. She kept rectifying that the bedding is cleaned every day. We did get a new pillow off her but quite frankly, the protector was shameful. The hotel reception, which is the first thing you see, is clearly a joke and is un-staffed. In fact, we never once seen anyone at it. It is a cheap build and is utterly embarrassing. They also allow you to leave valuables which, considering it's un-staffed isn't wise. There is also a fish tank at the reception and the poor fish in it are in a world of misery. The tank is thick green with algae and is disgusting. In our room we had a bible of rules to follow which had stupid rules in it such as not being allowed to wear shorts. It also says that if you need to contact them at night, you have to either use your mobile or use the bell, which is positioned downstairs at their door. Not everyone has mobiles and if they were immobile, they'd be in great danger as they wouldn't be able to contact anyone. The bell by the way is about 7 foot high so if you in a wheel chair, good luck. In the mornings, people were just stood around waiting for various rooms to open. The bar was un-staffed on at least one night and the barman was over the corridor in the lounge watching TV. Due to its silly opening times, one of the children on the trip was actually denied a drink and we're told something like "no, you can't until x-o clock". The range on offer was, at the time of our request very, very limited and very, very expensive. A small bottle of water for £1.20 when you can buy 4 for a pound in certain shops; and the bottles are much bigger. It has to be said that one of the most shocking things was the fact that there was a ladder left at the side of the building 24-7 right upto some ones room. This is such a security risk I cannot believe they have gotten away with it. In terms of Pam and Bob, they were both found to be below standard. Pam loves to be in charge of everyone and acts like a proto-typical headmistress. Bob was arrogant and failed to make eye contact. We actually only seen Pam on arrival and on departure, aswell as our complaint with her. Anyone coming to Torquay, or booking with National holidays to here, avoid at all costs. I mean seriously, even if the trip is advertised with another hotel, you could end up here. Seriously AVOID, and National Holidays, you should be publicly shamed as you don't care at all about your customers. Absolutely terrible.

Just returned from a 5 day nice little break at the Maycliffe. There are lots of positives about this place which include:-
friendly owners & staff - Pam & Bob the owners are lovely, nothing too much trouble and we had a lovely waitress, service was friendly and very efficient.
Nice food - never had a bad meal - choice limited, but very tasty home cooked food.
Good evening entertainment - a couple of singers were exceptional, everyone had a really good night, singing along, dancing, great!
A couple of negatives - rooms are in need of updating, especially the bathrooms, but nicely cleaned every day with fresh towels.
Bed mattresses weren't the most comfortable, but bed linen immaculate.
Location isnt the best, but the walk into Torquay works off the calories a treat!

On the whole, we enjoyed the stay and would definetely return :-)

Just returned from a 5 day stay in The Maycliffe. We found owners and staff helpful, The waitress was lovely and was always willing to serve our meals quickly. Food was fine. The room was small but we were out all day and was find for resting and sleeping after dark.

The location is high up but there is a bus stop near to the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay!

Just returned from a 5 day break in the Maycliffe. The owners and staff are rude and unhelpful. The food (or rations) is all processed, tinned, microwaved and wouldn't fill a mouse. Very stingy portions and had to ask every meal time for water. At breakfast only tea available, no coffee. one bar of soap the size of a postage stamp in bathroom. The bar only opened at 6pm so no chance of a drink until then. The hotel is situated high up out of town and away from the front so taxis are needed at a cost of £10 return to seafront/town.
The whole experience was awful, my holiday was totally spoilt by staying here. I can't believe how rude the owners and staff are! Will never go back and will tell as many people as possible to avoid!!!

Room Tip: nothing good about the place

Hi, just returned from a 5 day break in the maycliffe hotel, I must say it was worth every penny, although a little dated it was very clean and the food was lovely, the only downfall was the location it was very high up,but there is a bus stops outside the hotel, and a taxi is only £4.20 down to the harbour. Yes I still would return again.

Room Tip: We had room number 4 and we had no view apart from a fire escape not recommended

Stayed here with National Holidays, invited into bar on arrival Pam owner went through entertainment, times for b/fast and lunch etc. we were given our room key. went in to find very spacious and very clean room.and thought yeah its ok until we sat on bed. with every slight movement it creaked the mattress had gone and this was on old spring base. could have belonged to my Nana who was over niinety and now dead.Never got a good night sleep all time there. the toilet well you had to push on handle aprox 3=4 just to get the water to flow. Dinner served between 6-30 and 7-00pm but we all had to wait in hallway until they were ready as they kept door shut.Is it to much trouble to open door and let people take a seat? this was on every serving am and pm . food very basic tasted as though it was all cooked from frozen.b/fast no self service for cereal or juice had to order and wait . got drink from bar as we were never offered tea, coffee with meal. bar only open in evening not good when you been out all day and climb hill back to hotel only to find you got no chance of getting any refreshments. never seen the owners again they never even took the time out after first night to ask everyone if they were happy.sorry but i would not go back.
