Another brilliant meal! Expertly recommended by the attentive owner and cooked by a very talented kitchen crew.

Will be back very soon and can't wait for a take away service.

Definitely the best anywhere.

“A Really Pleasant Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

My husband had mentioned this restaurant to me when we were deciding where to eat on our trip to Torquay. When the owners of the guest house in which we were staying didn't seem to know of it I began to feel that perhaps we should consider somewhere else.....but we wanted a nice Indian and the reviews on TA looked great.

We arrived early, around 7.30, and actually wondered if the place was open as it appeared dark from the outside however the owners were happy to see us to a table and then the evening began. The proprietor is so passionate about his food and is happy to give any advice necessary including full descriptions of the menu and also recommendations. If you're looking for a regular indian meal this is not the place for you.....with items such as wood pigeon, squid, venison and mutton on the menu we quickly realised that this was going to be different.

The food we chose was delicious, the service was lovely...in no way intrusive but very attentive even though the restaurant filled up very quickly from 8pm onwards. The quality and price were amazing and this is definitely somewhere we will return.

“After 50 years of eating indian meals, this is the best I have ever had.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

Very good reception, friendly informative service. Really good flavours, portions not too large. A vary interesting fusion of goan indian and english tastes. The recommended indian wine went very well with our menu choices. An excellent evening.

A pleasant Indian dinner with a European presentation!
A warm welcome on arrival and a great variety of every kind of dish to suit all.

Scallops and pork loin starters followed by Tandoori chicken and fresh nan bread all beautifully presented and perfectly cooked!

A good selection of wines and beers both international and Indian.

A nice clean restaurant with friendly staff & easy parking right outside

Can be highly recommended

“Passion and Panache”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

The output of most Indian restaurants over the years has become fairly standardised, its a predictable but reliable formula - and why change a successful formula? At Lavani expect a significantly different dining experience. Collin Pereira (who IS Lavani) is a native Goan who is clearly proud of his culinary heritage. His food is cooked with passion and imagination. It is locally-sourced produce cooked with specially imported spices and secret sauces. Collin reserves two places on the menu for his 'creations of the day' which is one starter and one main that change daily. Our starter was Goan pork, which was immaculately presented (as all dishes at Lavani are) and very tasty. We were then presented with a complementary soup; a twist on traditional tomato soup which, again, was delicious. My main was the Lavani exotic platter which was essentially mixed meat and fish cooked in the clay oven. This came with rice and I ordered chapati and another side which tasted like nothing I'd tasted before. I have a big appetite and hardly ever leave food but this meal beat me. Absolutely gorgeous! Service is attentive yet not intrusive; Collin is more than happy to discuss his dishes if asked. He is knowledgeable about the spices used and the origins of each dish.

Nobody is perfect and if I had to point to weaknesses I would say that the bathroom would benefit from modernisation and the subdued lighting doesn't help old duffers with poor eyesight to read the menu! (He could also do with lighting the restaurant window a bit more, as from the outside it looked like the restaurant wasn't actually open). Only other thing was the music. I personally like to hear authentic Indian music, particularly when eating authentic Indian food.

None of this, however, detracts from the experience. I have put that this is one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant because it is certainly one of the best meals I've had in an INDIAN restaurant (only other similar experience was in a posh-nosh place in the centre of Birmingham). In fact if Lavani were to relocate to central London or Birmingham they would be one of those very trendy, very expensive restaurants which are always difficult to get a table at. Five star.
