“Believe the reviews”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Just returned from 3 nights at this B&B, and yes you can believe all the positive reviews that have been written.
We stayed in the Riviera suite, a nice large room with large windows perfect for those seaviews, and a huge bathroom with separate shower, deep large bath, bathrobes, and lovely soft fluffy white towels.

Marion greeted us on our arrival with a warm welcome along with coffeee and biscuits, which was very welcome after our long journey.
Breakfast very much lived up to it's TA reviews, and satisfied us for a large part of the day.

Marion really can't do enough for her guests, and is a very chatty, friendly, and an engaging host.

Thank you for a great relaxing break (pity about the rain)

We chose this B&B based on the sterling feedback on TA and it certainly didn't disappoint.

When we arrived we were offered the choice of either the room we booked or a better room at no extra cost due to it not being in use (it was absolutely pouring with rain during our visit and not ideal holiday weather). We eagerly accepted this generous offer and were shown to our top floor room (the family suite) with a sea(ish) view!

The hospitality tray was well stocked with tea, coffee, biscuits as well as a bar of chocolate tucked into each of our towels!

Speaking of towels, the bathroom was lovely and with the weather being as it was, it was certainly nice to come back to a hot soak and a comfy bed!

The location is great, just a short (20 minute) walk to Torquay along the beach (tide-dependent) and just a 10-15 minute walk (or 3 minute taxi ride) to a great local pub called The Drum with tasty, well-priced food and real ales.

The breakfast was delicious with a range of cereals, juices, tea and coffee, selection of breads and jams (homemade by Les, the owner) as well as a hot breakfast. Needless to say, the array at breakfast vastly exceeded expectations and was delicious to boot.

Marion and Les were wonderful hosts, welcoming and friendly. We would certainly recommend staying if you find yourself in Torquay!

From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Marion with a pot of tea and biscuits, we felt at home. We were booked into the Garden room for five nights but because we were looked after so well, we had a good night's sleep every night and the breakfasts were so delicious, we decided to stay an extra two days. We particularly liked the homemade bread, jams and marmalades and the locally produced sausages.
The attention to detail in every respect at The Charterhouse is second to none and Marion and Les really do 'go the extra mile' to make sure their guests are comfortable, enjoy excellent food and have everything they need to make their holiday special. We are already looking forward to our next visit to The Charterhouse!

You can book your holiday at "The Charterhouse" with confidence, I promise you, you do not need to look any further. My family and myself stayed here for a short break, and the family included a 16 month old child...and a dog. The owners could not have been more helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The hosts, Marion and Les are a really friendly couple who genuinely want you to enjoy your stay. It is well documented in other reviews regarding the breakfast, well I can only add to that (and some more). Suberbly cooked, fresh and delicious...served with a lovely welcome and a smile. You will not be disappointed with "The Charterhouse", our stay was made all the more special....so thank you so much...Marion and Les.

Room Tip: If you have a dog, then ask for the garden room...it is perfect.

I was visiting a friend in London and we decided to escape the city for a few days. Torquay seemed ideal -- not too far by train for a short break, plenty of gorgeous landscape to get us out of city mode, plus a nice array of food and lodging options. We found The Charterhouse through Trip Advisor. Its location was perfect -- right by a bus stop and also walkable for the downtown if you want to stretch your legs and don't mind the stroll (about 15-20 minutes if I remember right). But also very quiet and restful since it is not smack in the middle of things. Pretty garden setting means green views out the windows, plus on nice days room to relax outside if you like. Just up the block the opposite direction is a woodland/meadow pathway to a local manor house and old village --- a really peaceful and lovely way to spend the day.

When we called to book (I recommend booking that way if you can, so that they can help choose the best room for your needs) Marion put us in a room that was two bedrooms with adjoining door, so we could chat when we liked but still have private space. It worked perfectly.

Breakfasts were excellent, with Marion (and also her husband, Les, though he was away most of our visit) so friendly and welcoming you never feel awkward for a moment. More than one reviewer has noted it feels like you are staying with family or friends, and we found that to be true as well.

Marion gave us excellent advice on places to see and how to get around without a car. Also booked our taxi to and from the train station.

The other guests were also friendly and enjoyable to talk to if you wanted a bit of chat at breakfast. The place seems to attract a nice set of visitors.

We had a lovely, deeply restful trip.

Have already recommended it to other friends for any travels to that area.

We stayed at the Charterhouse at the end of July begining of August for the fourth time and never tire of singing its praises to everyone! It has become a home from home holiday destination thanks to both Marion and Les and their faultless hosting. They are both lovely, genuine, friendly and warm and go that extra mile to make sure your every need is catered for.We have stayed in four different rooms and each one is immaculately clean has everything you need, even down to the bars of chocolate on your arrival in the room to the hospitality tray and big white fluffy towels, very large comfortable beds and if your lucky enough to stay in the Riveria suite like we did then the bathroom is amazing complete with mood-lighting! Breakfast has everything, from healthy yoghurts fruit juices and fruit to homemade breads jams and marmalade, muffins, croissants and a self service cooked breakfast,If you fancy fish or something not already available Marion will get it for you without hesitation. The hotel is ideally situated as cockington is a nice walk away into the countryside and if you want to stroll into the town centre that will take you about 20mins.
Should you want to just relax in the beautiful garden with a nice cuppa or take a dip in the pool you can do that too! A perfect place to re-charge your batteries in a beautiful setting setting with the most lovely hosts. We will be back again for another relaxing home from home holiday.Thank you to both Marion and Les, just wish more hoteliers and guest house owners took a leaf out of your book! With very best wishes to you both xx

Room Tip: The Riveria suite for pure luxury but all rooms are fantastic.
