“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2009

We booked this hotel on the basis of the reviews on this website. This hotel was not rated top of the reviews but the position and ample parking were the deciding factors. Some of the higher rated hotels failed to provided adequate parking. The hotel was decorated and maintained to a very high standard. The breakfast consisted of a buffet for cereals and fruit, with a a served cooked breakfast. The cooked breakfast was as healthy as is possible for a cooked breakfast with items grilled where possible. There was a continental alternative to the cooked breakfast should you prefer. We stayed in Room 6 and this was reasonably spacious and as mentioned decorated to a high standard. Chris the owner was extremely friendly and helpful and gave us tips on where to eat at night. We ate at three of his recommendations and he was spot on with his view of each of them. We recommend that visitors book the restaurants as soon as they book the hotel. Our recommendations are 1) The Orange Tree - Fabulous 2) No 7 - Fish and Fish - Great Food and Atmosphere 3) The Elephant - Very nice if perhaps not as good as the restaurant owners think. Try them in the order shown and you can walk to each. We will certainly stay here on our next visit to Torquay.

If you need a hotel in Torquay in which to dispel the image of Basil, Sybil & Manuel waiting to greet you then this is the place.

From the moment we entered we felt the guys there put themselves out to make us feel welcome and make our stay enjoyable. We were there to see in the New Year and they pointed us in the right direction for our meal on that evening.
They recommended the Orange Tree and were weren't disappointed.

The Hotel is situated on a hill just up from the town centre but we felt this was no real problem, we didn't need crampons and oxygen.

The Lounge / Bar was a very comfortable place to relax, the dining room again was very pleasent, Breakfast was very filling, with a varied choice including full English.

The bedrooms aren't massive but then you have to take into account that when the place was built bedrooms were just for sleeping in !.

We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to our friends and family, and hope to return one day.

We stayed one night at this hotel which is in an excellent location for visiting Torquay. It is well within walking distance of the town centre but is situated on a steep hill so walking back is hard work. We stayed in the four-poster room which felt a little smaller than it appears in the photo on the website but was clean and well-maintained with nice decor. There was tea, coffee, bottled water and biscuits, and a decent flat screen TV. The Clarins toiletries in the bathroom were a nice touch.

Although the hotel is close to town, it was very quiet at night and we slept well. I do agree with a previous reviewer that breakfast is served a little early for my liking (8:30-9:30am), and there is an early check-out (10:30am). The breakfast was good though and I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at the Haytor Hotel in September this year and although there were no complaints it wasnt as wonderful as some of the other reviews had us expecting. Clean, quiet, decent breakfast, parking etc, everything Id expect. Found the room a bit small though and pretty basic. Not the dearest Hotel in Torquay by any stretch of the imagination but there is literally nothing to do for whatever amount of time you spend at the Hotel. A small bar and thats it, Id at least expect Sky TV in the room, but had to settle for freeview after we'd had a long day out and about and wanted to relax before going out for dinner. The "free wi-fi" connection was temperamental at best, most of the time AWOL. The staff were friendly enough but only really saw the nice lady who serves breakfast and that was it apart from checking in and out. Nothing really bad to say about the place but didnt blow us away in terms of luxury or comfort either. Not to mention the killer walk up the hill back to the Hotel. If you like it quiet and can entertain yourselves 100% of the time I'm sure you will love it, I cant and will be looking elsewhere next time.

It was nice to stay in a hotel that had made an effort with the communal decorations as well as in the room..Top marks.....

A great location near enough away from the town but everything within walking distance.

Breakfast was lovely and fresh and kept us going till lunch time.

We use to live in Torquay and came back to reminise and spent many hours at Thatchers and Meadfoot beach..........both nearby.

Fantastic hotel in fabulous peaceful place. Owners and staff so friendly and helpful. Very clean and well kept hotel. Have spent time there on several ocassions. Would recommend.

  • Liked — In a peaceful location, out of the way of the touristy part without being far from any of the actual main town.
  • Disliked — Can't think of anything.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2008

My partner and I had a pleasant stay at the Haytor in August. We were attending a function at an alternative venue and the Haytor was clearly a more comfortable venue to book into – being as it is at the top of the Trip Advisor list for Torquay!

The gentleman who greeted us was extremely helpful and was happy to answer any questions regarding the local area, taxis, and how to get to where we had to be that evening. The room was small, but comfortable. I would imagine that rooms in the main part of the house may be a little more sizable. The room had a plasma TV and the usual tea and coffee making facilities that you would expect. The bathroom was very small, but again equipped with all that you would expect. Unfortunately as we had arrived after 5pm we were unable to order a paper for the morning, this was however, clearly explained to us so no complaints there.

What I did find annoying, and this purely because I have spent time staying in hotels around Europe, was that breakfast was only served between 8.30 and 9.30 in the morning. After a late night this is rather testing. It was a bank holiday, but I would expect this to be even more of a reason to extend the hours for guests enjoying a brief get away. Any other hotel of this class should offer breakfast for more than one hour surely? We had also been told that check out was 10.30 a.m. Another British trait that we seem to encounter all too often. Thankfully this was generously extended to 11.a.m. What is it with UK hotels? I regularly find that check out is 12.pm on the continent and that breakfast is usually always served until at least 11a.m. Rant over.

All in all a lovely place, just let down by those British ways… early birds should book at once
