“Just of the beaten track....!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

On a sudden impulse we pulled off the main road to Torbay where we discovered this lovely pub/restaurant driving down to the sea to check out the walk along the coast path at Maidencombe. Following a little research on-line, we decided to stay the night and ate in the restaurant in the evening. The speciality pies were delicious. After a good night's sleep, we were spoiled for choice at breakfast, which we shared with another couple who had stayed the night - there are only two rooms, so you it was a very personal service.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the staff/owners were very friendly and accommodating.

“Wonderful Beergarden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

Dropped in here on a sunny afternoon, because we saw the sign on the main street. We then had a very good cream tea in the garden. What a lovely place, a real hidden gem. Just a few minutes walk from the Maidencombe Beach and the South West Coast Trail. Looked also very comfortable inside. We sure would have tried for dinner, if weren't already booked somewhere else that evening. Maybe next time.

“Good Pub Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

Great location providing good pub food in the bar, restaurant or outside, menu not overstretching itself but dishes properly prepared with fresh foods and served by attentive staff. Good range of wines and ales, mid-range prices apart from one small gripe of bottled still water and a cordial at £1.75 + £0.80. Otherwise well worth a visit but be careful on the descent down the hill and the return to the main Torquay/Teignmouth road.

Dear David B
Glad you enjoyed your meal with us, and your comments with regard to the food and staff. We have a very comprehensive menu, which all types of dishes, but we would rather do what we do well than being too fancy and actually not delivering what is promised.

I take on your comments with regard to water and cordial overpriced, but believe this they are considerably less than similar establishments.

Would love you to visit us if you are in the area again.

Kindest regards

“Superb food, excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

A late night sojourn into the countryside found us falling over the sign to this pub. Following a steep descent into the village we came upon this excellent hideaway. What a gem! The service was excellent with friendly staff and the food was superb. Great value for money there was an excellent choice of menu and the food tasted excellent. Well recommended to anyone in the area as opposed to some of the larger food chains. A pub with a genuine interest in what they do - excellent stuff.

“Bland food, slow service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Just had Sunday lunch there, had heard their advert on local radio so decided to go there for a family lunch. Shouldn't have bothered. We elected not to have starters but went straight into the main course. Perhaps we should have brought starters with us as it took over an hour for the main courses to arrive. They were very busy but seemed not to be able to gear up for the numbers that day. The food was average, was expecting something a bit more special because of the prices charged. It is top end for Torquay and not value for money. It is a beautiful pub so would recommend going for the charm and ambiance, have a drink or too, but forget the menu.

Dear Mike 1
Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
Our radio advert is for our Pies Galore Menu which is discounted Monday-Thursday and Friday Lunch, so what exactly you were expecting is beyond me (fine dining?)
This was the May Bank Holiday Sunday, the sun was shining and we were as expected very busy. It wouldn't be particularly unusual for someone to wait an hour under these circumstances but in fact no-one waited more than 45 minutes. We were totally geared up for the day, and every member of our team worked very hard to give the best service we could.
Our prices are a little dearer than pub chains, but all our meat is free range, local and organic, cooked from fresh, no frozen microwave meals here, so this is to be expected.
Others reviewers visited the same day and thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the garden taking in the atmosphere whilst waiting for their meals, but I see from your other reviews, that waiting is not something you like to do, so maybe that was your real issue.
Kind regards
Fiona Bruckin
