“Very traditional old fashioned Classic English hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

You can imagine that "back in the day" this really was a grand hotel. Now however it's a bit tired and old fashioned. However the location overlooking the bay is perfect. The staff are very friendly and the rooms a decent size. There's a decent sized indoor and outdoor pool. And they serve real ale at the bar!

e did not stay at the hotel itself but chose to dine in The Compass Bar and Grill within the hotel following a recommendation we received. The venue itself is really lovely with windows looking out over Torquay seafront which, at night, is a spectacular lightshow. The staff were super-attentive and provided us with everything that we needed throughout the evening. The food was excellent: well prepared and presented - my own choice for the evening was 'catch of the day' which turned out to be Dart Salmon - absolutely gorgeous. As a bonus there was really good live music from 21:30 - a lovely girl singer who sang with both energy and comittment and whose repetoire was most enjoyable. Definitely a place to go back to!

Room Tip: TO be sure of a table it would be wise to book - particularly at the weekend.

We stayed for one night which was most enjoyable. The hotel is well positioned. The reception area and opening into the lounge was impressive. We had a big bedroom which was very clean but somewhat dated. The lounge had extensive views of Torquay's waterfront. The dinning room was large and the breakfast was very good. The indoor swimming pool area was clean and in good order. The pool was shallow and the jacuzzi was very hot. The staff were very polite and helpful. The rendering at the rear needs some maintenance work and improvement to the external appearance above and beyond the reception area. While our room was good, we stayed at he hotel with a couple who had room 129 which had problems with continuous noise from the kitchen ducting. Overall, well-positioned and a good place to stay, particularly if on an offer price.

Room Tip: Got to be sea facing, some rooms at rear suffered ducting noise.

we stayed overnight at the Grand Hotel, Torquay. The outside of the Hotel is extremely shabby which gives a very depressing first impression. Inside the lobby and public rooms are very tastefully redecorated and the staff very helpful and enthusiastic. Alas, a different tale of the bedroom, which was very tired and shabby, the bed old and uncomfortable and the furniture over well used. A chair was placed on the little balcony, but as the balcony was in very poor condition with peeling paint and cracked plaster work, there was little to induce one to sit out!!! The breakfast was very nice, semi buffet, and hot drinks and toast to the table, the bar and lounge area was very nice with lovely views over the bay. It was a great pity that the receptionist could not be bothered to look up from her telephone conversation to say "thank you for staying" or something similar. Torquay itself is in the middle of major roadworks in the centre of town, which meant access to the shops was limited. The town itself is in need of a makeover, a lot of empty shops and too much litter.

Room Tip: I would not recommend a visit to the hotel until the bedrooms are upgraded.

Came to the hotel for a two night break reception area great staff all very helpful , we had upgraded our room when we booked but were most dissapointed , dated tatty small and very uncomfortable bed , we have stayed in two of your other hotel and been over the moon hence the reason why we came to torquay to stay in the grand.
The pool was nice but once again dated and not clean moldy ceiling.
Dinner was great, but whats happened to the little mini soup you get before the starter like in padstow and fowey ?
The staff were most helpful always , cant fault them and a wonderful bar with a great selection of cocktails.
Wont be coming back to the grand but will def be staying in the other hotels.

The Grand Hotel never fails to please, lovely to see the open fire in the library, everyone is very helpful and they all take the time to make your stay easy. The only moan I have is the front of the bar area has been taken over by tables for people who want snack meals this means people staying in the hotel and eating in the dining room never have a chance to sit in this area, it would be nice to have comfy seating for people to relax after their meal, sometimes there was not enough places to sit in the bar and the 'bistro' dining was empty, it does seem a little unfair that people coming in to eat snack meals which can be eaten anywhere take over such a lovely area. If the bistro is necessary could not be placed in one of the front conference rooms as it seems unfair that people paying for full board miss out.

We spent 2 nights here recently and on our way stopped at The Grosvenor for lunch, just to see if it was as bad as depicted on the TV .(it was)
We were informed that they were so busy that a lot of their clients had been sent to the Grand,I think that with this tactic the RIchardsons run the risk of lowering the Grand to Grosvenor status rather than raising the Grosvenor up towards the Grand.
In my opinion they would have been better advised to spend the Million Pounds upgrading the Grand!!

Good morning Peter,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review for the Grand Hotel along with your feedback regarding the Grosvenor Hotel too.
The Grosvenor was purchased in October 2012 by the Richardson Group. It is a beautiful hotel that has been neglected over many years. It is now being invested in and it will soon be back to being a very respectable hotel. It has already had thousands spent on it but unfortunately this investment is not easily visible to our guests, for example a new boiler enhances the stay but it doesn't add value, likewise the new fire safety features we have installed ensure that our guests sleep safe at night, but these safety features don't help to create a better first impression on arrival. Bedrooms are currently being refurbished, customer service training is happening and improvements are being made in all departments every day.
The Grand Hotel is also being invested in. The Grand and Grosvenor are just two of the five hotels in our group and they are all being invested in.
The Grand's ground floor and public areas are very 'Grand', welcoming, comfortable and they are always full of vibrant atmosphere. A bedroom refurbishment plan has been created and a the difficult process of decorating so many bedrooms and corridors has already begun.
I really do appreciate your feedback and I do hope that you will visit both the Grand and the Grosvenor again in the future. I can honestly say that I have two fantastic teams of staff at both hotels, investment is happening and the future for Richardson Hotels looks bright.
If I can be of any further asssistance my email address is gm.grand@richardsonhotels.co.uk.
Kind regards
Chris Jones
