“Good but dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We stayed at the Grand for a couple of days with one of the hotels special deals. We had a sea veiw room, which was a family room, as we were given a choice by the very pleasant and helpful receptionist. The hotel still had its Christmas decorations up as they had won a local award and were due to recieve the award on our second day there. The decorations certainly added to the tastefull and relaxed feeling to the public areas in this 4star hotel, but the room we stayed in was quite dated and was not up to the standard of the public areas. We had sheets and blankets on the bed, which is not really what you expect for a 4star establishment, having said that though, the bed was comfortable.
The food in the hotel was badly let down by the cooked breakfast, which on the first day was a buffet. The sausages were tasty but hard and gave the impression of having been cooked the day before, the same could be said for the bacon. There was plenty of choice for breakfast but again you would expect better. On the second morning we were served at the table and I thought the cooked breakfast would be fresher, unfortunately it was worse than the day before.
The evening meals were the complete opposite, tasty, fresh and imaginative.
The staff were very pleasant and helpfull and overall we had a nice couple of days.
The hotel has a very good seafront location with lovely views over the bay and is within easy walking distance of the shops and other attractions.
We were satisfied with the stay having paid well under the normal rate, but if we had paid the normal rate, I would have complained about the breakfast.

Room Tip: Sea view preferably.

Stayed 3 nights over new year. Enjoyed every minute of the 3 days, food was amazing and faultless service. We were a large party of 12 and were lucky to have a very attentive and efficient waiter called Alex looking after us. Praise should go to the restaurant manager for ensuring the New Years Eve gala dinner was spectacular. We had a buffet on the 1st January and I can honestly say it was the best buffet I have ever had. Would recommend the new year package and hopefully will return to The Grand soon.

We were invited to dinner one evening just after Christmas by friends. The reception area was very crowded and noisy with very little room for a pre-dinner drink. We found the dining room was soulless and had no ambience at all. The service was appalling - it took two and a half hours to be served three courses - if we had been on our own we would have complained. The food was very poor and of the "bought in" variety and reminiscent of "boil-in-the-bag". It was a totally unmemorable and not of the standard one expects from a hotel of this rating.
Our friends showed us their suite which had been refurbished and was very modern with grey wallpaper and shiny black furniture - totally ghastly decor in our opinion.
We had been thinking of staying at this hotel but now we have seen it there is no way we will do so!
Another thing - Parking is really non existent so we had to take a taxi. This would totally preclude us staying there.

I have been to The Grand on a number of occasions both for bar meals, evening meals and overnight stays. Fantastic building in a great location with a beautiful grand entrance hall and lounge area. Everything is scrupulously clean and tidy however the rooms are starting to look very tired in places. Really comfortable beds and everything that you need for an overnight stay. The bar food that I have experienced was very well presented but very average, lacking in taste and flavour. On the most recent occasion the bar/conservatory area was quite busy but there were plenty of staff on duty, however trying to place an order for food and drink was a challenge for some reason. Not just the initial order but the subsequent additional drinks and some extra bits and pieces.
That said, all of the staff were really pleasant and friendly everytime we have been so I think it's an organisational issue perhaps.

Called in for a light bar lunch over the New Year Period and the lounge/bar area was full to capacity meaning we had a table in the library which lies just of the main bar. Service was very pleasant and efficient even though the staff were very stretched with such numbers - That said the food soon arrived and and all four main dishes were excellent from the fish and chips to the lovely burger to sandwiches and nice homemade soup. A contrast to the bar service we recieved or indeed did not recieve at the Imperial. Well done everybody a well deserved pat on the back especially for the person who put up all the lovely festive decorations

My friend and I were greeted by a friendly porter who took our cases and arranged the parking. The high quality of the service continued with everyone in all areas being so friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and quiet. The food was superb. It was obvious much hard work had been done in the kitchen. The dining room was well staffed at all times. The New Year's Eve dinner was the best ever. Good entertainment and the "Race Night" good fun. Pleasant walk into Torquay. Swimming pool great. Probably best hotel in Torquay. WELL DONE !!

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room. There are plenty.

me and my partner stayed here whilst on a romantic holiday to torquay and i cant say anything negative about it!

The facilities are well kept and the pool and spa were lovely!
We ate the the restaurant and the waiting time for food was average, My partners a chef (so as you can imagine hes rather picky about his food) and we both thought the food was perfect!

The room we stayed in wasnt as modern as i thought it was going to be, although we had a lovely sea view. the bathroom was rather small! but we got what we payed for.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to other people! Its right opposite the beach, just outside of town (for if you want to avoid the nightlife) and perfect fr families and couples!

Room Tip: if you can get a room with a sea view then do it! you wont regret it
