Owner description: Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. This museum uses a clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts' Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks. Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more. Following the recent restoration project, the Abbey now boasts a new educational suite which provides opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the Abbey's history.

“Interesting, but space could have been used better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2009

We recently visited Torre Abbey whilst staying near Torquay. The Spanish barn is such a great building and I thoroughly enjoyed the Gormley work there. However inside the abbey has a completely different feel. Staff were friendly enough but my partner who was heading for the toilet got told off by a member of staff, for not looking at the information on the wall which I thought was a bit cheeky! And the same member of staff proved to be a bit patronising later when we were looking at the artwork, she spoke to us like we were about 12!

I would like to read more historial information but it was all a tad bitty. And there are far too many white walls and empty exhibition spaces and I really didn't like the glass work that was on display, not inspiring at all! I wisjh overall that the spaces inside were used more effectively. Despite all that there are some nice gardens and interesting aspects to the place, just mind you don't get told off!

“Great buildings, rude and aggressive service in cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2009

The abbey and buildings have just been reopened after extensive reservations. Both the gardens and buildings are delightful. The staff at the abbey were professional and knowledgeable. Torbay council have worked hard to achieve a top quality visitor attraction. A great day out if you enjoy old buildings and gardens. Very reasonable entrance fees.
