Owner description: Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. This museum uses a clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts' Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks. Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more. Following the recent restoration project, the Abbey now boasts a new educational suite which provides opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the Abbey's history.

“Lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013 via mobile

This ancient place has been lovingly and expensively renovated in the most sensitive manner to make it a must see for any visitor to the English Riviera as we must now call Torbay. It is a stark contrast to the seafront and offers peace and tranquility as well as much to see.
The cafe is also worth a visit serving brilliant baguettes etc and also well prepared snacks. You will pay much more on the seafront for not such good quality.

“Unexpectedly enthralling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

A group of mates & myself decided to see the transformed Torre Abbey. We all have varying degrees of interest in history but to a woman we were entertained & fascinated by the tour. The interactive elements were fun & informative yet aimed at all age groups. I thought I knew quite a lot about Torquay's history but left with a great deal more info brought wonderfully to life. Don't miss the hidden chapel; the finding of which transformed us into a bunch of laughing kids. Finally, don't miss treating yourself to a cuppa & some delicious food at the cafe on the way out. Michelle & her crew are charming & the food delicious & plentiful at very reasonable prices. We'll all be returning. A resounding success for Torbay!

“what a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Rainy day so thought would give it a go. Excellent attraction with old ruins, house and garden. The kids loved the quiz around the gardens. Lots to see and do I the house with interactive experiences that the kids lived. The speaking man was odd but good and the dining room table was great - never seen anything like it. However will not give the game away. Less than £20 for a family visit - brilliant. Best thing we have done in Torquay.

“A real gem in Torquay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

We visited the newly refurbished Torre Abbey this morning and spent a fascinating time looking at the new 800 years of history exhibition. It is beautifully laid out and attractive for all ages with buttons to press and multi-media presentations which really bring the story to life. The rooms are also full of interest and the stunning art displays give a wonderful insight into the history of Torbay.

We have lived here for almost 38 years and were totally entranced - in fact we bought an annual membership because we will go back time and time again. There is so much to see and do, it is well worth a visit if you are a visitor or a resident in Torbay
