Owner description: Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. This museum uses a clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts' Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks. Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more. Following the recent restoration project, the Abbey now boasts a new educational suite which provides opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the Abbey's history.

“Beautiful gardens in Torquay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Many tourist leaflets suggest the Abbey is open but it's closed for renovation till 2013/14. You can still go in the wonderful gardens, though, 9-5 Monday till Friday. A wonderful tranquil spot.

“The Garden is great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

The Tor Abbey is closed for restoration but the head gardener Ali showed me around fascinating flowers, shrubs, plants and trees..

I saw rare plants, which are described in the books of Agatha Christie. Some of these plants produce poison. I also saw medicinal plants such as aspirin. In the glass house, one can see great many tropical and sub-tropical plants.

It is a kind of mini-Kew garden in one small area.

I also loved the sculpture in the garden which mirrors moon light.

“Shame it was closed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

I have visited this place and was really disappointed that it was closed for restoration. Unfortunately there was no sign on the website that it is closed. I had a chat with one of the workers there, who said parts of the building are almost ready and it is definitely worth a visit. He told us that he would make sure that a notice would be placed on the website.

Torre Abbey Historic House is currently closed for restoration, reopening in July 2013.Would love to visit in the near future.
