“Luxury!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

A very relaxed holiday in a wonderful setting with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!
A lovely family run luxury hotel and the indoor pool with its' waterfall feature and hydro massage was enjoyed very much by my 11 year old son! Would recommend this to anyone!

Room Tip: Room 5! Amazing Views!

It's important to understand that the comments below are based on paying £137 per night and the level of justifiable expectation that accompanies such a Bed & Breakfast tarriff.

Haldon Priors is located in a leafy suburb of Torquay which will offer peace and tranquility for most guests and a short stroll from Meadfoot beach. It should be noted that this is hilly terrain and it is not ideally located for those who want to be close enough to stroll to either the harbour or town centre.

The hostess was extremely welcoming and helpful...as she was for our entire stay and it was obvious that a significant amount of hard work and money had been invested in the house which has been very tastefully decorated.

That, I'm afraid, is where the positivity ends.

Our room (3) was cold upon arrival and we were told that heating only comes on twice a day (this is £137 per night B&B!). Lack of sugar on tea/coffee tray. Very little toilet paper...which was never replenished. When you are charging your guests "top dollar" you need the attention to detail to be spot on...sadly it wasn't. Room 3 lacks much in the way of natural sunlight and lights are constantly required. The bathroom was very well equipped with a good selection of gels/shampoos etc' however the shower itself lacked sufficient power.

Room 6, where my parents stayed, overlooked the front of the house and was blessed with a lot of natural light. The potential drawback with this room would become apparent on our second night when friends of the owners left the party at 1-1.30am with little regard for sleeping guests and/or the noise level generated. The resident dog, Taylor, also thought he should bark his contribution.

It also became evident that the room keys were not individually marked which we found rather odd when it came to identification purposes. Our suspicions were confirmed when the key to room 6 also opened the door of room 3. It appears that one size does indeed fit all the room locks...a very worrying and unfathomable decision by the owners.

Breakfast on our first morning was beautifully cooked and of high quality. It was a shame that it was served by a young lady who was about as far removed as you could possibly find from the surroundings she worked in. She wore "Max Wall" leggings which bordered on obscene and her table side manner was probably the worse I can recall at any hotel. At one point she stood in between my wife and I, turned to me and asked " 'as she ordered anyfink?". Upon leaving the breakfast room we gestured our thanks to be greeted with "Cheers, fanks"!

The hostess was extremely helpful with our restaurant reservations and taxis which was very much appreciated.

The guest lounge area is beautifully decorated and I can imagine of a summer's day the outside terrace, overlooking the pool, would be a very popular place to enjoy your cocktail or G&T. Sadly the property does not have an alcohol licence but you are welcome to bring your own "refreshments".

After dining out on our second night we returned to find family members in the guest lounge area, and as there were five in our party it meant "no room at the inn"...or at least in close proximity so we retired to our rooms. The hosts had invited some friends around for the evening and, as alluded to earlier, we all became aware of them in the early hours of Sunday morning as they departed.

Breakfast on our second morning commenced at 8.30 and ran through until 9.30. My parents made their way down at 8.40 to find no place settings had been prepared. We joined my parents at 9.05 as they awaited their breakfast. The hotel was full the previous night with 15/16 guests staying but only 10 chairs were available. As other guests arrived the lady who was organising breakfast intermittently brought additional chairs from the kitchen for them to sit on. Our breakfast (two poached eggs and a bowl of porridge) arrived at 9.30 which was after later arriving guests had ordered and received their full cooked breakfasts.

There is a clear randomness and inefficient nature surrounding breakfast although the food, when it eventually arrives, is of of a good quality.

In summary, this is a beautiful house which has seen a significant amount of investment. Any B&B that charges £137 per night needs to focus heavily on attention to detail and ensuring that all elements are of the same high standard. It may be early in the season and these matters may well be addressed as time goes by but guests paying top dollar have a right to certain standards no matter what time of year.

Our rating regarding "Service" reflects on our breakfast experience and lack of attention to detail in room.

Thank you for posted reviewed on 1st April

The review did not make our Tariff rate transparent to trip advisor as the room was actually occupied by 3 people, at this £137 per night bed & breakfast included, the Tariff is very clearly advertised and to make it absolutely clear when booking, so that our valued guests are aware that we offer our luxury facilities at this extremely good value rate.

We have experienced some of the coldest days in Torquay, the guest is correct the heating comes on twice a day, that is usual but to counteract this cold snap and adverse weather the heating temperatures were increased and open ornate gas fires was lit and the temperatures increased rapidly.

The comment on the " Max Wall " leggings is very personal, yes, she may not have university degree, she is just a local girl who works hard. .

Torbay is built on seven hills , which make spectacular location like Meadfoot Beach, Haldon Priors is unique because it offers secluded tranquility from the town, and this little hill is the barrier that make it so special, Haldon Priors is close enough to take 5 minutes easily walk into town centre & harbour, or you can catch a small bus that leaves the gates of the hotel on the hour.

I think the viewer should look at all other review to see the level of care & expectation are very important for our valued guests.

This place is a genuine gem.
There was a problem with the website booking and it shouldn't have let the transaction go through as they close at the end of September, and we wanted to stay the first week of October. So, you know what they did? They stayed open just for us! Amazing. That kind of commitment to guests means a lot.
When we arrived, the lady owner was at the door waiting to welcome us. Throughout our stay she was thoughtful, friendly, always happy to help or advise and never made us feel like we were in the way.
The hotel itself is immaculate and occupies one of the best positions in the whole area with beautiful, very well cared for gardens and views of Meadfoot bay. It is also very quiet and we weren't woken up once by traffic or other noisy irritations.
Breakfasts were delicious (we asked where she got her sausages: Waitrose. Not cheap ones from a local cash & carry. Blooming Waitrose!). And she certainly knows how to poach an egg. Also try the haddock and the kippers. Absolutely mouth watering.
The location is quite out of the way, so a car would be an advantage but isn't essential. Also (and this is just a personal view) the guesthouse probably wouldn't suit families with children, although during high summer the outdoor pool would probably keep the little ones entertained.
This hotel isn't cheap, but you really do get what you pay for and it doesn't get much better than this. The owner makes you feel like a valued guest and not a necessary evil. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
Thank you for a lovely stay!

we booked 5 out of the 6 rooms for a weekend. overall hotel very good and very clean. however, thought was overpriced. we were in haldon suite- most expensive in hotel. had no view except a concrete wall and looked into next doors room. as end of season, felt like staff just going through motions. outdoor pool closed and very dirty. patio doors didn't open.patio heaters didn't work. gym /games rooms we had to ask about, as all locked up. couldnt use after 7pm!!!!. as this is a tourist place to visit, most people out in the daytime or at the beach, seems a bit ridiculous that it cant be used after 7pm. quite disappointed due to the amount of money paid.

Room Tip: all rooms quiet, but quite expensive as they vary so much in size.

I recently stayed at the hotel for the first time with a very dear friend who's been going there for many years. The hotel is ideally placed - just a short walk from Meadfoot beach. It is beautifully decorated and immaculate. The owner offered us fantastic personal service- nothing ever appeared to be too much trouble for her. I would definitely recommend this hotel to other people, and cannot wait to return.........

This guest house was a real positive surprise. Its wonderful situation above Meadfoot beach, the beautiful house itself and the lovely decorated rooms.

Additionally the propriertors were absolutely nice and courteous and helpful. During our stay we had the enduring feeling of being welcomed and cared of.

We wil definitely come back and can highly recommend to book your overnight stay in Torquay at this place!

We (my husband myself and our 5 year old) stayed for a couple of days in August and we loved it - haldon priors is a beautiful place with high ceilings and large airy rooms. We had the sea view room and the bed was so comfortable. It has an indoor and outdoor pool - we only used the indoor pool which was lovely and warm. It is only a short walk to either the sea or the harbour so it's perfectly placed. The owner, Ping, is really lovely and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for a beautiful stay.

Room Tip: Sea view room has a really comfortable bed
